Guidance for Atlas & Erg Chebbi - 2 week Itinerary Included

Hi All,

Thank you in advance for any advice/tips!

I'm planning an early October trip with 3 of my friends. We are all women in our late 20's/early 30's from NYC and all very comfortable with International travel. I'm really writing for advice on transportation between cities and info on the Atlas Mountain and Erg Chebbi part of my trip but am happy to receive hotel/restaurant/hammam recommendations as well.

Land in Casablanca 8:30am split Grand Taxi between the 4 of us to Oualidia

2 nights in Oualidia

2 nights in Essaouira

3 nights in Marrakech

2 nights in Atlas Mountains

1 night in Erg Chebbi

3 nights in Fes

1 night in Casablanca - 3:30pm plane

What's the best way to get from Oualidia to Essaoira?

Does anyone know of a company in Marrakesh with English speaking drivers? Or just have a company you could recommend?

We are planning to hire a driver to take us from Marrakech to the hotel Auberge Le Festival (2 night stay). Is it reasonable to think we can leave Marrakesh first thing in the morning and on our way to the hotel (by night fall) have the driver stop at Telouet Kasbah, Kasbah Ellouze (for lunch), Ait Ben Haddou, Skoura & Hdida - Kasbah des Roses? Have you been to any of these? Are there other Kasbahs we should check out?

The second day in the Atlas Mountains, we are planning to arrange a tour of the Todra Gorge & Dades Gorge through our hotel. Do you think we will be able to see both these in 1 day? If we can only do 1 which would you recommend? We plan to ask our hotel if they can arrange a driver for us to get to Merzouga from their hotel.

It's the hardest for me to find info about the Atlas Mountains so if I'm missing anything significant, please let me know. (None of us are interested in seeing the Film Studio in Ouarzazate).

I'm having a really hard time finding tour company's for the Camel Trek in Erg Chebbi and would really like to arrange something before arriving in country but, everything I see online is a 3 day canned trip from Marrakesh which we aren't interested in. We are willing to pay a little more for a more upscale camping experience. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I know there is an overnight bus but, what are the other options in getting from Merzouga to Fez?

Let me know if I can clarify any info?

Thank you!

Some parts slower than others, but I estimate 7 hours of actual driving from Marrakech to Auberge le Festival, not accounting for the diversions off the main route you're suggesting.

So the following is a too ambitious imo:

"Marrakech to the hotel Auberge Le Festival by night fall ... stop[ping] at Telouet Kasbah, Kasbah Ellouze (for lunch), Ait Ben Haddou, Skoura & Hdida - Kasbah des Roses?"

The other issue with this plan (as described) is that the driver would need to do a 12+ hour day for you, after which you no longer need his services. He won't be able to drive back to Marrakech until the next day....

It will be a tough day to go from Marrakech through all the places you want to see until Tinerhir. Just from Marrakech to Ouarzazate it takes about 4.5 hours, then to Tinerhir 3 hours so the whole day on the trip will be. Not much time to stay, look and enjoy.

You can do both Dades and Todra Gorge in one day, lot of time. But if you want to go to Dades, then it would be better to stay overnight somewhere there in Dades, not in Todra Gorge. Otherwise you get detour, back and forth. And then the same way towards Erg Chebbi.

In Erg Chebbi if you take you to any hotel, they will arrange for you camel trek with overnight in theirs camp in sand dunes. But if you wish to have something more luxury, search here on TA, you find something. You can book anything in advance also.

From Erg Chebbi to Fes apart fron the bus you can take private taxi, or shared taxi and go in stages. From Erg Chebbi to Fes apart fron the bus you can take private taxi, or shared taxi and go in stages. You can stay overnight in Midelt, it is in the middle between Erg Chebbi and Fes. And you can do stop in Azrou if you want to see cedar forest and wild monkeys.

You can also rent a car and do this "desert trip" by yourself, from Marrakech via all places until Fes. Roads are good, well signed so if you can drive, then it would not be any problem. From Fes you can take a train to Casablanca.

Unfortunately I don't know how to go from Oualidia to Essaouira. Maybe shared taxi?

Would you consider a hire car for the duration and share the driving between you? It would really open up your options and not as daunting as you might think. You've clearly spent the time researching your proposed trip, and it sounds fab with some great choices. I really think you would do so much better in control of your own transportation...

I wish! We're New Yorkers. Only 1 of us has a drivers license and she's never driven a manual. Hahah. I haven't driven a car since I was 19.

Well, the good news is that every hire car I've been given in Morocco has been automatic.

Think of the hassle you'll save, not to mention the $$ if you can persuade her.... In fact, you could offer to pay her travel expenses between you, and you'd all still win!

Strange, as I know it was difficult every time to be given automatic. I not need it, I drive manual only, but know that just people from US wish to have automatic and had difficult to find. So if you, Nortwest, have been given automatic every time, it must be something new. Last time I was in Morocco was in October last year, so it must happen recently that they have many cars wirh automatic gearbox. Good.

Re: the overnight in Erg Chebbi with camel trek - have you tried getting in touch with Sara of Ali & Sara's Desert Palace? It's my understanding they offer just the overnight at their camp with camel trek if you arrive in Merzouga on your own (as opposed to having to go on a full 2 or 3 day canned tour).

That's who I plan to camp with in Erg Chebbi on my trip (and we'll be driving ourselves to Merzouga).

NorthWest - Thank you, yes, I was worried that that would be too much. We will probably plan to stay at a different hotel a bit closer in the first night.

Appreciate the feedback!

Beth H - Yes! I've been following them on facebook and they look like a great option! Definitely what I'm leaning towards, I just wanted to see if there was anyone else people recommended.

Thanks!
