Things to do in Belfast Acadia area

I am visiting the Belfast area for a week in July. Can anyone recommend not to be missed things to do in this part of the state or good restaurants? We have been to Acadia's main attractions so are looking to branch out on this trip. I am traveling with a 14 year old and enjoy hiking, swimming, kayaking, and nice walking paths. I don't mind driving to check out new places in state but will be based in Belfast. Thanks!

Belfast you are close to Camden and Rockland. You can check the "things to do" tab at the top of their town pages. Camden Hills State Park/Mt Battie and Moose Point State Park are easy from Belfast. Lake St George State Park (for fishing and swimming and hiking) is less than 20 miles from Belfast. A mile further is Lori's Cafe, excellent and John's Homemade Ice Cream, also excellent.

Belfast, Camden and Lincolnville also have a "restaurant" tab at the top of their TA pages.

Belfast has a nice walking trail along the river, the Belfast Rail Trail. For more hiking ideas look at waldotrails.org. (Familiarize yourself with the deer-tick problem if you are hiking the more woodsy trails, and bring mosquito repellent).

Young's Lobster Pound is a favorite for a casual meal. Delvino's for a nice dinner or they have very affordable lunch offerings.

For something different, pack or pick up a picnic lunch, go down to Rockland, and ride the Maine State Ferry Service to Vinalhaven – 15 miles and an hour and fifteen minutes offshore. Last time we were there (admittedly a while ago), there was a nice picnic area (but no restrooms) adjacent to the ferry landing. Easy walk to the smallish island downtown. Great views of Penobscot Bay… Don’t bother trying to take a car – expensive and hard-to-get vehicle reservations. Walk-on pedestrian tickets are all you need. Just be sure you buy round-trip tickets and that you don’t miss the last ferry back to Rockland!

Google Vinalhaven ME and Maine State Ferry Service for island and ferry details. Also not-to-miss is the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum just south of Rockland.

One more question, do you know of any lakes or state parks that rent kayaks or canoes in the area?
