best route end March/start April Havasu to San Francisco

We are an older couple coming from England for about 10 days starting 26th March. We are starting in Las Vegas and going down via Kingman to Havasu city.

My husband is very interested in the railways and we are planning to drive along highway 40/route 66 to Tehachapi. We plan to take about 4 or 5 days to this point.

We are flying home from San Francisco and would be grateful for suggestions as to the best and most interesting route from Tehachapi to San Francisco. We'll probably spend a couple of days in the Bay area so we're talking 3 to 5 days on this stretch.

The roads though the Sequoia National Forest look quite challenging so we were wondering about going up through Central Valley or crossing over to the coast.

We've both travelled to the States a lot but not that particular area.

We see that California is experiencing severe drought - is this having an impact in that area?

Any advice is very welcome.

A nice place to see the railroad off I-40 is at the Kelso Depot in the Mojave Preserve. Inside is a museum with train and ranching/mining history of the area. The old diner is still there, just no food service. Sit on the patio and watch the mile long trains roll by.

Barstow also is a hub for train activity. Also has a Route 66 museum.

Between Vegas and Kingman is the mining town of Chloride.

Route 66 between Kingman and Oatman is one of the better stretches.

Nearby Vegas is the rail town of Nipton. The old hotel is close to the tracks.

The coast is always fantastic....and lots of information on trip advisor on that route.

Another route is to take highway 395 north

With a railroad interest, here are a couple of stops along that route (dez40 has already done a fantastic job on places by Las Vegas- Barstow). Along the highway 395 route you can see Mammoth Lakes, June Lake Loop, and if the summer Yosemite and if not, Lake Tahoe on your way to San Francisco.

In terms of railroad related things:

a) Laws Railroad Museum - Bishop

http://www.lawsmuseum.org/

Stay one night at Bishop or Mammoth Lakes. The Best Western in Bishop is nice.

b) Nevada State Railroad Museum

Stay overnight in South Lake Tahoe Area.

and on your way to San Francisco stop by Sacramento for the excellent California State Railroad Museum

and stop by Napa Valley and take the Wine Train through the valley (albeit this last one is geared towards making $$$$ and tourism)

Arrive late at night in San Francisco.
