Hi there
Travelling to Sunshine Coast in Sept 2018. A quick question on Mount Coolum - is it best going up there for sunrise or sunset? Do you see both?
Sunrise - sun comes out of the ocean. Do be aware it is a very rough track in places, and going up or down in the dark is not something i would recommend. We always go up early morning as it gets too hot otherwise.
There is only one water tap at the bottom and no toilet facilities - take everything with you and have snacks/water/sunscreen - you will need it.
Cheers.
Unless your a hell, seasoned professional and know the tracks like the back of your hand do not attempt a sunset trek.
Sunrise is over the ocean and you will have more light to get down the mountain. After dark on the track is tough even for the seasoned professional.
Watch for runners on the track as they usually have headphone in and would hear or see you coming so be alert.
We live close by and go up and down almost daily - Sunrise is popular as you can do see the sun rise over the ocean. Early mornings and late afternoons are most popular - long weekends and holidays are almost chaotic. Sunset cannot actually be viewed from the top due to vegetation. The track up is pretty easy to follow - it is easy formed track and rock stairs up to the 120 mtr level and gets a bit rougher (lots of gibbers) after that but still very easy to follow. Many people do climb up in darkness with torchlight. Mt Tinbeerwah just west of Noosa is good for sunset viewing.
