Re any input. Why don't you do what some other tourists do and buy a cheap car and sell it when you do not need it. At least then you can get over all the restrictions and have more flexibility.

Just out of curiosity what is the event you have planned in Broken Hill. I have driven at least between Port Augusta and Broken Hill and the roads are literally empty with no traffic. It is quite a good road trip driving on outback roads. I see doing a road trip to Broken Hill from Adelaide return you could have done a big loop and gone as far as Mildura and explored country areas not many tourists ever get to see.
Agree its an easy drive. If you are returning to Adelaide I'd hire a car.
