Looking at diving from Te Anau to Lake Tepako then to Christchurch end April. Any suggestions on how many days we should allocate and not to be missed sightseeing.

Debra a little more information would help

Are you flying into Queenstown and out of Christchurch?.

How many days in total do you have.

something like this.

Queenstown 2 nights

Te Anau 2 nights

Wanaka 1-2 nights

Would suggest 2 nights at Mt Cook or 1 night Twizel followed by all day in Mt Cook National park and overnight at lake Tekapo.

Christchurch 1-2 nights fly out.

I'd go

1. Te Anau to Wānaka

2. Wānaka

3. Mt Cook Village

4. Lake Tekapo

5. Christchurch

OR

1. Te Anau to Cromwell/ Lowburn/ Tarras (there are some cool 'Canopy Camping'/ AirBnB places around Bendigo/ Lowburn)

2. Cromwell area to Mt Cook

3. Lake Tekapo

4 Christchurch

Cromwell: Highlands Park ('loo with a view' is worth a stop, even if you're not interested in the car race track); old town Cromwell; various vineyards

Wānaka: Crown Range/ Cardrona en route. Mt Iron, Lavender Farm, Puzzle World, cycling/ walking trails; great restaurants.

Between Tarras and Mt Cook: Lindis Pass; Omarama Clay Cliffs; High Country Salmon farm

Mt Cook: Tasman glacier viewpoint hike; Kea Point.hike; Hooker Valley Hike (a must do - EASY out and back); glacier lake boat cruise; skiplane flight and landing on Tasman Glacier.

Lake Tekapo: Mt John Observatory; Tekapo Springs hot pools; Church of the Good Shepard

Flying into Christchurch stay 1 night

Tranz Alpine to Greymouth

Collect car

Stay Franz Josef 1 night

Wanaka 1 night

Drive to Te Anau 3 nights to incorporate Milford and Doubtful Sound

Thinking of then heading to Invercargill and Dunedin and stay 1 night

Then Dunedin to Mt Cook and Lake Tepako stay 1 night. Not sure about the logistics of this.

Then to Christchurch stay 1 nigh.

Then looking at train to Picton stay 1 night.

Ferry to Wellington

Any suggestions would be appreciated

In your post #3 there is way too much going on. Do you plan to stay in Invercargill and Dunedin 1 night each?

1 night stays give very little time for sightseeing at your destination, as you will spend all your time driving.

If you want to go to Mount Cook/Tekapo, remove Invercargill and Dunedin and think about 2 night stays in places.

As mentioned you have too much traveling and not enough time for sightseeing. Give Dunedin a miss as to do it justice you need 2 nights there.

So let's look at it again.

Day 1 Fly into Christchurch stay 1 night

Day 2 Tranz Alpine to Greymouth Collect car and drive to Franz Josef

Day 3 All Day drive to Wanaka 1 night

Day 4 Drive via Arrowtown to Te Anau (3N)

Day 5 Milford Sound Cruise

Day 6 Doubtful Sound cruise

Day 7 Drive to Queenstown (2N)

Day 8 Explore QTN

Day 9 Drive via Karawau Gorge (suspension Bridge) and Cromwell (Lake Dunstan and Historic Precinct) to Twizel O/N Twizel

Day 10 All day in Mt Cook National Park then drive to Lake Tekapo O/N Lake tekapo

Day 11 Lake Tekapo to Christchurch stay 1 night

Day 12 Train to Picton stay 1 night.

Day 13 Ferry to Wellington

If you have an extra day on the south island I would add it to Wanaka

1N stays are exhausting - you have to check out at 10am daily, so no sleep in; no time for laundry; no time for a casual walk around the neighbour to get the feel of a town & no time for much sightseeing. On such a short trip, you really don't have time for both fiords.

You could gain a day by dropping Te Anau completely & adding 1N to QTN, then doing a full day coach tour to Milford Sound.

Thanks for insight and suggestions. I think we will look at 2n QT etc and scrap Invercargill and Dunedin. We haven't finalised a fly out date yet and time is not an issue so any other suggestions welcome. Have booked in from arrival in CC through to Te Anau. Everything else is open.
