Car rental vs car share

Hi! We’re going to be in Queenstown Dec 31-Jan 4th or 5th. It’s our first time, and we’re traveling with our teenage kids.

We haven’t booked housing yet- debating between hotels and airbnb.

However- do we need a car? We’d like to visit a winery or 2, so not sure if there are car shares we can use or we should just plan on renting a car the whole time?

Thanks

You will need to book asap as your dates are over peak travel season.

It will be easier to hire a car the whole time, as long as you have somewhere to park it.

Queenstown has Uber and taxi's but they will be expensive for out of town trips. I don't know if Queentown has hourly rental cars, but you wouldn't want to rely on those in peak season anyway.

Find and book accom asap. With children an apartment/ AirBnB type place may work better - having space and kitchen facilities (or maybe a motel?).

A car may also make getting about a bit easier too - though remember to check car seat needs.

Yes, taxi, uber, bus. No car share (Queenstown is a small population). Many activites have transfers/ transport from downtown Queenstown.

kia ora, as others have said, book soon. Book a car rental, have a look at Apex or Ezi. We stayed at Oaks Queenstown Shores resort apartments a couple of years ago and it was very good, fantastic views and walk to town, have a look at recent reviews.

If you take rental accommodation in town make sure it has free parking on site as parking in Queenstown can get expensive.

No one is exaggerating about booking those dates by yesterday. The whole Queenstown and Souther Lakes will be full to its capacity over this period.

You will be lucky to get a tent site! Especially over New Year. It's party central!

It's peak summer holidays for local and our cousins the Aussies. The top 2 groups of tourists by number. Think summit, not peak.

You will also need to book a rental car if you decide you need one.

Is biking an option for your family? You could bus to Arrowtown and hire bikes to bike to some wineries. Or use a bike hire company to transport you to Arrowtown and pick you up from a winery later but that's around $400. There are also wine tours. So you don't need a car but it could be the best option to do the things you want to do.

I think #2 missed the "teenage kids" bit, they won't need (child) car seats :)

Id book your rental car next if you are going to book one at all.

Your teenagers should enjoy the party vibe. Probably more action for them at Wanaka than Queenstown
