Itinerary help Milford Sound

Our family of 5 (3 kids, 13 10 and 8) are on the South Island from 3-13 Oct.

I currently have us with 1 night in Te Anau and 1 night at Milford Sound to do a cruise on Days 6 and 7. But I'm having second thoughts about this whole leg and not doing Milford Sound. I'm thinking of adding an extra night to Queenstown (to make it 4 nights) and Wanaka (to make it 2 nights) instead. That would save 2 days driving and give us time to do a couple of half day walks.

Is Milford Sound really a must see? We are locked into a flight out of Queenstown on 13Oct.

The big attraction of Milford is the drive in and out - you might as well do the boat trip once you're there, but it's the scenery which is really the point. And it is really outstanding. I loved it, my kids love it, but they enjoy looking out the window. If your kids are bored by scenery, I'd maybe give it a miss.
