Take a tour, you're probably driving a lot already. Relax and enjoy the scenery whilst someone else does the hard work.
I would definately recommend a coach tour as the time you are going is still in Avalanche season and the coach will stop at all the attractions along the way.
Relax and enjoy the ride.
Avalanche season runs until the end of October! Take the tour.
Thank you, all for the advice!!

At the moment the avalanche danger is low and the road is open.
Conditions can change very quickly, so it pays to check the status before setting out. ,Edited: 03 September 2018, 11:51
Going in Late November, any chance of avalanche?
Not much at all. November should be fine to drive.
I would rent the car. Allow a lot of time, you can drive as slowly as you want and make as many stops as you want. There are beautiful views and a lot to see in the way to Milford Sound. We reserved 2,5 hours from Te Anau to Milford and we were about 25 mins too early. But we had a good luck in the tunnel, only 5 min waiting. Many cars drive slower than we did.
