Scenic flights

Hi folks

I have a full day in Invercargill in a few weeks before boarding a polar ship and was googling to see if there were scenic flights (small plane or preferably a chopper) from there to do a fly-over of Milford Sound ?

I did find a company that goes to Stewart Island but their website directs to a domain seller so I cant work out if they even still exist.

If anyone can point me in the direction of where to ask, or some company names - that would be fantastic :) Thanks in advance.

Someone from the South Island would be able to help better, but for scenic flights, the local aero club is usually a good place to start. As you point out, their website appears to be down, but you can ring the Southland Aero Club on + 64 3 218 6170. I would expect this to cost from eight hundred dollars, and go up from there.

As I am suspecting that Milford Sound would be prohibitively expensive, and getting there by chopper is rather unlikely from Invercargill, I am giving you information on Stewart Island instead, as I think this would be a better option for you. Milford Sound flights generally depart from Queenstown, two hours drive+ north of Invercargill; and there are other beautiful bays and inlets to explore, closer to Invercargill.

To have a look online, Stewart Island Flights - naturally - specialise in flights out of Invercargill to Stewart Island. http://www.stewartislandflights.com/

In addition to their scheduled service - usually three flights a day on nine seat Islander aircraft to the island's Ryan's Creek Airfield, they do scenic flights over the island to pretty much wherever you want. Do note this is costly - but not nearly as much as a Milford Sound trip would be. They charge $435 for up to five people ex Ryan's Creek, and more if you are flying from Invercargill, for which you will need a quote. Ask them if they can land you on the beach at Mason Bay, which will of course, cost extra, but its not just anywhere you can land on a beach! They also do an excursion down to Port William for a day tramp, if this interests you, and then return you to Invercargill. The levy for entering the Rakiura National Park is included in all airfares or quotes given.

If this costs too much, the twenty minute flight down to Ryan's Creek is fairly scenic all on its own, and costs $203 return each, but if you have a larger group, again, get a quote.

Stewart Island Flights own and operate Ryans Creek Airfield themselves, which along with the small aircraft used, explains the high fares.

Hi PP,

You turn up in interesting places. The firm that fly to Stewart Island also does charter work with smaller aircraft. A scenic flight over Fiordland is an amazing experience not to be missed IMHO.

Thanks folks.

I did find the websites for the flights from Queenstown and Christchurch but they dont meet my schedule sadly as I am flying straight from Melb to INV via a couple of hours in CHCH airport.

I dont look at pricing - only "can it be done". Not a group - just myself (I charter choppers and small planes in most places I go - its an addiction!!). I was hoping that as the distance wasnt prohibitive that more would operate from INV.

I see more than ample little islands on my polar trips so Stewarts doesnt really interest me. Was hoping for more of a photography excursion over the fjords and inlets etc.

Thanks for all of the links - I will send them an email and see what kind of private charter could be done for me.

If not - I will just have to occupy myself with a good wander around INV all day :) It appears to have some lovely buildings and gardens to explore.

Just needed to fix my craving for a chopper flight :) Darn !!!

Extra thanks as via those links I just found Southern Lakes Helicopter Charters - which had not come up in my earlier google searching. Have sent them a quote request.

Hi PP,

The Stewart Island charter company should be able to organise a chopper flight out of Milford Airport with a glacier landing if you wish. We did a fixed wing flight from Queenstown to Milford with a chopper flight to a glacier then fixed wing to Invergiggle and back to Queenstown. I'm sure the reverse can be organised.

If not try this mob that are part of the Queenstown aeroclub ask for Julie Anne their chief instructor.
