Arthur Pass via Hwy 73

I just got the 100% pure NZ touring map . I am at a loss! I want to go from Christchurch to Greymouth Via Kirwee , Darfield ,Sheffield , Springfield , Cass, Arthur Pass. Otira, Moana Greymouth :

Is this a road ?

or only the railway line used by the tranzalpine train since Hwy 73 in red which run parallel to that line up to Otira on that map,,,ending up in Kumara and not Greymouth does not seem to go thru the others towns : Quite confusing!

HW 73 starts/ends at Kumara Jct 11 km south of Greymouth. There is only one road over Porters and Arthurs Passes. The railway and highway follow different routes but are sometimes nearby as at Arthurs Pass and from Otara to Jacksons.

Hwy 73 leaves Christchurch further north than the railway but runs along side from Aylesbury through Kirwee, Darfield , Sheffield and Springfield It then follows a different route over Porters Pass and passes Castle Hill before rejoining the railway near Cass. then mainly the same e(except for a long tunnel) through Otira to Jacksons when the railway goes north into Greymouth and the Hwy is slightly south to Kumara Junction.

Do not worry, well signposted no need to follow maps.

As pointed out in #1 the road pretty much follows the general path of the railway, touching in places.

From Christchurch you head West down Yauldhurst Road. It becomes quite obvious one you are on it, you are just " heading for the hills. If the mountains are not directly in front of you, take that as a sign that you have achieved the impossible and taken a wrong turn.

You will pass those settlements. However if you blink you may miss some of them. It's flat until Darfied and then the climb starts and there are no decisions to be made on direction until you get to Jacksons.

If you get lost on this route it's the universe telling you that you shouldn't be allowed out alone.

It really is a beautiful drive. Just be careful where you stop for those Kodak moments. Whatever you do, NEVER in the middle of a one way bridge! I've lost count of how many times I've come across that!

You might have to walk 100 meters from a safe parking place to get the ultimate shot.

Once over Arthur's Passs you turn right at Jackson's towards Moana and Jackson's.. It is well sign posted.

I found a pdf of the touring map online: https://www.newzealand.com/assets/TNZ-Touring-Map_Web.pdf

The bright red mark is what they call the "Great Alpine Highway". All the colored lines are scenic drives (roadways) with a designated name. Hwy 73 doesn't quite get you to Greymouth, but the train does.

As stated above, there aren't many crossroads and it's well marked. You shouldn't get lost. Will you have a mobile device with Googlemaps or similar? With Googlemaps you can download the maps for offline use. It will show you where you are in relation to the map (blue pulsing dot).

Not sure why you want to drive through Kirwee but here is your map https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Christchurch/Kirwee/Greymouth/@-43.1123519,171.7873749,10.75z/data=!4m20!4m19!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d322f4863c5ed01:0x500ef8684799945!2m2!1d172.636648!2d-43.5320301!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d31ff8ea031db1b:0x500ef868479cd70!2m2!1d172.2147895!2d-43.4998327!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d2f3fd94dd51053:0x500ef86847972a0!2m2!1d171.1985024!2d-42.4614253!3e0?entry=ttu

As Mike said, blink and you will miss some places in New Zealand. They aren't small towns or villages, more some houses, maybe a church and pub.

That's even better hopefully with gas station along the way.In New caledonia we must have seen about no more than 20 cars while driving the 400 kms crossing from the west coast to the east and along that coast
