Hi Pippa - Milford Sound is a return trip ex Queenstown (13 hour round trip) or ex Te Anau (7-8 hour round trip). There is nothing there except a wharf for the boats, and you definitely cannot pick up your rental car from there. I'd suggest you do the coach trip ex Queenstown on the 2nd then pick up the rental in Queenstown on the 3rd.

Between Hokitika and Kaikoura the usual stop is Christchurch, but another option might be Hanmer Springs. Going to Christchurch takes you through the amazing Arthurs Pass area, whereas the best route to Hanmer takes a different but still stunning route.

Lastly, I don't love Blenheim, so if given a choice I'd opt for more nights in Nelson and just stop in Blenheim for lunch.

Thank you your swift reply:

Sorry if my post was unclear we are flying to Milford sound and doing the nature cruise before flying back at 16.00 and picking the car up in Queenstown.

I will take a look at Hanmer Springs and Arthurs pass.

Thanks again.

Consider something like this(you haven’t stated interests so we don’t really know what you want to do):

2. Fly/cruise MS; return to ZQN at 1600; pick up rental car & drive to Wanaka (2N

4. Drive to Fox/FJG (wherever you can get accommodation) 2N

6. Drive Hokitika; explore Hokitika Gorge

7. Drive to Chch via Arthur’s Pass. (1-2N**)

9. Drive to Hanmer Springs

10. Drive to Kaikoura (2N)

12. Blenheim or Picton, depending on your interest (2N)

13. Either Marlborough sounds cruise/hike from PictonOR wine tour from Blenheim

14. Continue on to Nelson/ATNP

Having left accommodation bookings so late you might find it easier to get 2N bookings rather than 1 and you will have. Amore relaxed trip.

I'd also suggest that you may want your rental car before you go to Milford, depending on what you have planned.
