road closures around Canterbury and state of emergency

If you are travelling around Canterbury roads are closed due to slips, flooding, bridge washouts. A civil defence state of emergency has been declared in areas and the army is assisting with evacuations and rescues.

Advise is to not travel.

If you have travel plans which include Canterbury in the next week it may be a good idea to delay or check roads.

SH to Akaroa is also now closed. Some of the bridge repairs and slips are not going to be a quick few day fix so some communities and areas are going to be isolated for a bit longer.

Porters bridge on porters pass on road to arthurs pass is one of the bridges which has had a washout so this road is also closed.

check the NZTA for latest road closures and info. I check it everyday before i travel always https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic

Impacts throughout the SI. My guests in Akaroa were temporarily trapped at my house by a fallen tree so decided to stay an extra night & stay safe - then of course SH75 closed on them. Incoming guests driving up from the south can't get through South Canterbury either via SH1 (closed at Hinds) or Rakaia Gorge. In a repeat of the last big South Canterbury floods (but worsened by the simultaneous closure of Porters Pass) the only route from Otago to Christchurch is via Lewis Pass - adding 670 km to the trip from Dunedin to Chch!!

#2 yes. if you south of canterbury and want to get to christchurch or north of christchurch at present the only option is via westland, west coast, springs junction and through lewis to get to christchurch. Its a long long detour.

Incredible that one farmers rain guage had never been above 120mm, it was 320mm in the weekend.

This was from Stuff site.

There were 10 state highway closures in place throughout Canterbury on Monday morning due to slips, flooding and damaged bridges.

The high tide had caused severe flooding in Akaroa township late Monday morning, believed to be caused by blocked pipes. The Christchurch City Council had contractors and staff on the ground and were working to ease the flooding.

Nineteen roads were closed in the Ashburton district and three bridges had collapsed or been washed away. Others were expected to be affected by flooding and damage.

Might speed up the process of replacing and adding to that Ashburton bridge. It will be a long way from Christchurch to Dunedin if that is out of action, even partially.

If the Ashburton Bridge has to be replaced it will cause HUGE disruption to commerce and travel between Otago & Canterbury, on a par with the Kaikoura earthquake. I don't understand why the rail bridge has not even been mentioned - does anyone here know the situation there? Surely if it has survived, freight such as groceries & stock feed at least could be moved by rail. Compounding the problem is the fact that many dry land farmers on Banks Peninsula agist their stock on irrigated pastures in south Canterbury for the autumn and now may not be able to get them back. Let's hope tomorrow brings good news.

At least SH75 is now open.

10pm update - the bridge has been OKed to reopen!

#5 it has a partial open to light vehicles and long term future in doubt. Press release is “ Twelve hours after the Ashburton/Hakatere River bridge closed on Tuesday morning due to a 15cm slump, authorities began stress testing the span with 14 tonne concrete blocks to check its integrity.

The bridge was finally reopened to light traffic about 11.30pm on Tuesday but is set to close again between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday, for further investigations.”

The climate change events are certainly making their impact felt

It was only 2018 that HW1 was blocked on the Kaikoura coast. We are far to vulnerable when we have to rely on that one road..

SH75 is fully open, not even a sign of road flooding, although a few new “lakes” in paddocks close to Lake Waihora/Ellesmere. I swear the grass has even started to grow on the Peninsula😀

Good news that both the Ashburton & Hinds Bridges are now open under 30kph speed limits. SH73 is still closed at Porters Pass.
