Auckland to Kaitaia

What would be the best way to travel from Auckland to Kaitaia? We are wanting to visit relatives and want to know our options. How long of a drive is it? Would it be expensive to fly and what airline?

Kaitaia is off the map as far as the main carrier is concerned - they will get you to Bay of Islands Airport (near Kerikeri) but unless you plan to rent a car there, you might as well catch a bus north from Auckland and save some money. If you want to fly, Barrier Air (www.barrierair.kiwi) will fly you to Kaitaia for $120, which is not bad given it is a tiny plane - it would be a great scenic flight on a nice day.

Inter-City Bus departs Auckland at 7.30am and arrives Kaitaia at 2.10pm. Standard adult fare is $64.

I just did a dummy booking for AKL-KKE on the Air New Zealand site. They show flights - 4 per day. It's not codeshare, they are operated by Air New Zealand.

Kerikeri airport was upgraded to take larger aircraft, and it's becoming increasingly busy. You could fly into Keri then hire a rental car from the airport.

Otherwise Barrier Air into Kaitaia is a useful option. $120 is a very good price compared to a flight into Whangarei.
