Snow situation in the southern French Alps

Snow situation in the southern French Alps

In June I start my multi-day trek with a tent, the route runs above the tree line.

I have three possible start dates to choose from:

June 12th

June 19th

June 26th

I am aware that in normal years there can still be snow above the tree line in June and I am also aware that nobody here can predict how much snow will still be there in a month and a half.

I am experienced and well equipped. I don't mind a little snow, but I don't feel like an almost compact snowpack.

I want to book the arrival ticket by train in the next few days.

In order to be able to assess whether I might be able to take the early start date on June 12th or rather one of the later dates, I have the following question:

In terms of the amount of snow, was last winter a normal winter or was it a winter with little snow or even a lot of snow? I mean the area around Briancon and south of it up to the Parc National Mercantour.

Can I suggest that ice will be a greater problem than snow although hopefully your equipment will include crampons and an ice-axe.

Yes there is still snow there. You can check out the webcams below for Auron and Isola 2000:

Thank you for your answers.

Yes, I'll take crampons and an ice ax with me.

Thanks for the link with the webcams. I had already looked at some webcams from the area, but my original question was actually how was the winter in general,......either little snow, a lot of snow or normal?
