Mike, I think you should see this thread, which was started almost simultaneously with yours by someone in exactly the same situation. Eamon's reply will, I'm sure, be just as relevant to you as far as how to spend the time goes: he, or someone else, may also be able to help with your question about a transit visa.
I think the OP will find some answers to their question on this website. I have no experience of transit visa requirements unfortunately.
https:/… Scroll down to "Case 3" . I think it might be relevant.Edited: 29 June 2018, 20:47
Yes you need a visa if you want to stay in a hotel outside the airport. You don't need a visa if you stay in the airport transit zone.
See Case 3 in the link provided by Eamon. That is the relevant information.
Tell me what you did and found in athens airport ?
Am planning to travel to turkey from cairo and also long transit :(
This thread has not had any further activity since end of June. Most likely the OP (Original poster) doesn't follow this thread anymore.
When asking a question in an old thread you stand a much better chance to get a reply by using the pm option.
Like you can see on your own personal page all posters in the forum has a pm option on their page. Look up your own to get the idea.

You are asking complete strangers about legislation.
A wrong answer taken as a guide can lead to tremendous trouble that could ruin your trip.
