Previous Memories Good or Bad

Seeing this board has gone a bit quiet, I wondered if anyone would like to share their first memories of Funchal/ Madeira.

My first visit was in 2003 and can remember that I thought it was spotlessly clean. Still is imo.

The Porto Mare resort was just being built and a lot of the banana plantations were gone.

Visited Harry’s Bar and we were the only people in the place! Had the German pianist play for us and it is still there to this day although the pianist isn’t!

Old Town wasn’t as busy as it is today.

No Shopping centres that I can remember.

To me, it’s still as lovely as it was then but has had many changes.

I first visited Madeira in the summer of 1977. I visited with my parents and as I had just completed my studies and about to embark on a new career, they paid.

We landed on the original very short runway. I think most people on the plane had either landed previously or had been pre-warned about the airport as there was a 'deafening' silence among the passengers on the final approach .

Our accommodation was at the comfortable Hotel Madeira Palacio (I believe it was previously known as Madeira Hilton) - west of Funchal. The hotel at that time stood in isolation among the banana plantations . It has sadly been derelict for some years but I was pleased to see ENOTEL has taken over the re-build . What is now the Lido Area was banana plantations at that time.

A novel way of getting around Funchal was the bullock carriages - I was suppose it was the HOHO bus back in the day.

There was no cable car so it was by bus that we traveled to Monte - it was a few visits later before I plucked up the courage to go in the toboggan .

As the original post says, there were no shopping centres and most of the shops were in the centre of Funchal - with the odd one dotted here and there - one being what was called 'A Rosa' flower shop. My parents used this shop over the years to buy flowers to take home

.I have visited many times since and have , of course , seen a lot of development over the years but would say that Funchal has , in the main, been developed in a tasteful way.

Much of rural Madeira is still pretty much as it was then.

First visit was in 1995 landed on the shorter runway, The pilot announced when we come into land you will experience the noise thrust of the engines and a very hard brake, sure did! ...before we come to an eventual stop. Everyone in the cabin clapped and cheered on landing.

The coach took us from the airport and my best memory was seeing all the Agapanthus along the roadside, just wonderful. Brought Agapanthus plants home and they still bloom each year in pots in my garden. Love to look at them from my kitchen window.

Booked a last minute break and stayed at the Dorisol Complex out at the Lido. Used to take an after dinner walk along the main road where a lovely gentleman living in a small house would be out watering his banana plantation. We waved and nodded each evening. The Porto Mare Hotel is there now.

Just loved this first visit. Went back the following year they were clearing the land in the Old Town, the waiter where we had lunch said they were building a new hotel, which turned out to be the Porto Santa Maria Hotel. We stayed there the first year it was opened and returned there year after year.

Loved the island on that first visit watched it change year by year. Still love the island now.

My wife's first memories of Madeira in 1987 were of travelling on the coach from the airport with her luggage on a lorry in front, to the Girasol Hotel with no motorways or tunnels.

She remembers Paulo Sousa who was a junior waiter at the Girasol and is now the Maitre d' at the Med Restaurant in the Porto Mare Hotel.

I was unable to accompany her on that visit due to work commitments but have been many times since then, starting in 2008 at the Porto Mare Hotel.

We have three bookings for visits in June, December and January, but have no idea when we will be able to see our friends there again.

Got it a bit wrong the first time. Stepped onto a chugging yellow bus at the airport, which carved its way up somewhere above Canico, having to stop and reverse blind around corners to let trucks and stuff past. But that final corner-rounding moment was hair-raising in the good way as Funchal majestically appeared in the late afternoon shine, sweeping from high green ravine down to glimmering ocean.

No other city has had quite that first impact. Nope, not even Stoke.

Our first visit was in 2007 with Atlantic Travel (part of Pestana group) - and we were so impressed that we bought a 15-year timeshare with Pestana at the Carlton.

The Lido area was pretty well developed by then.

We were on holiday just a week before the mudslides which struck Funchal, killing some 40+ people. We watched in horror on the TV at home and marvelled at the resilience of the people who got Funchal cleared and up and running again so quickly.

My own horror story was being diagnosed with pneumonia while on a Thomson holiday there a few years ago. Spent five days in the horrible Marmeleiros hospital near Monte - staff and treatment great but the buildings dreadful.

We have grown to love the island, the people, the food, well everything.

bucksfizz - I remember on one holiday, a guest in Classic Savoy became ill and was taken to the hospital to which you refer.

His wife said much the same as you - care from the staff was excellent but the buildings were disgusting .

Lovely to hear all the fascinating stories of the regular visitors to the Island.

I have been travelling for many years, but a newbie

to the stunning island and its amazing people.

We are now in our senior years and will not manage

to explore the Island as much as we had hoped.

Great memories though and we introduced our kids and grandkids to it.

My first visit was in 1972 with my husband ,my mother- who was already a fan of Madeira and a friend with his sister and parents. The short runway gave us all a bit of a scare. We arrived at the old Savoy after an interesting journey on the old roads,it was Easter time and the hotel was very busy. I will never forget the Easter Sunday buffet, a huge long table had ice sculptures of swans and in the middle of the table was the biggest chocolate Easter egg I had ever seen. The service was impeccable, smart jackets were the rule at dinner plus ties.

We hired a car and drove up into the hills and stopped at a small village where a procession had just finished earlier in the day, the road was strewn with white lilies, the busy restaurant in this village served us Espada, delicious. It was all very rural and quite beautiful as we sat looking down onto the green terraces of vegetables and flowers.

Reid’s was just up the road after the Sheraton which is now the Carlton, nothing after Reid’s but banana plantations. We had a wonderful Easter holiday and fell in love with the island and its people . I have returned many times since and see lots of changes ,I just hope that it does not get more built up and choked with hotels around Funchal. Meanwhile I am keeping my fingers crossed for my Christmas holiday there.

This is a great thread!

Some fascinating stories of the early days of tourism.

We are real newcomers compared to most. First visited in 2013 when they were re-building the marina area after the floods. Heavy plant and machinery building the sea defences and casting the concrete tetrapods and dropping them into the sea. All the seafront towards the cable cars was screened off.

We still enjoyed it though and have returned 6 times so far.
