Sistine Chapel Closures--how much notice?

We would like to pre-book Vatican Museum tickets but have noticed that occasionally the Sistine Chapel is closed for special events. How common is this and is there ever much notice? Is it possible to change tickets a couple of days out if we arrive and find it will be closed? I know my son visited a few years ago and it was closed so it is a concern.

It doesn't close that often. Sometimes there is advance notice and sometimes, like the death of the Pope, there isn't. Once a ticket is purchased it cannot be changed or refunded.

We were in Rome the week of April 3-10, 2005. Pope John Paul II died the day before we arrived. We had tickets to the Vatican Museums on Friday, April 8. We heard on Tuesday morning that the Sistine Chapel would be closing for the Friday, April 8 funeral and the convening of the Cardinals. We called the museum and were allowed to visit with our Friday tickets on Tuesday, April 5. So back then, they did allow us to use our tickets on a day other than the one for which they were issued.

If it is closed for the death of a Pope they will usually allow you to visit another day with your tickets.

You cannot change tickets once they are issued. If there are special circumstances and the Chapel is closed they may or may not let you use the tickets on another day. It's a situational thing.

Yes you can change the date of your ticket. I know because I just did it.
