Can anyone tell me how far the airport is from downtown Madrid? Is this the location of the Holiday Inn? I am coming on a tour in December. Am considering arriving a day early.

Also, what are the New Year's Eve activities in Madrid?

Thank you much.

The airport is located approximately 15 km (just under 10 miles) from the center of the city.

The Holiday Inn is located at Plaza Carlos Trias Bertran, 4, in the Financial District, near the Santiago Bernabeu Real Madrid Football Stadium. You can take the metro to Santiago Bernabeu station - line 10, or a taxi from the airport (under 30 euros).

You'll find that it’s a long walk from the hotel to the old city and the museum triangle, but the bus service along Paseo de la Castellana is very good. A taxi will generally cost about 6 or 7 euros to Puerta del Sol

Every night is busy in Madrid, especially NYE, but if you are planning on having dinner, then you should reserve well in advance. New Year's day will be fairly quiet.

As Robert suggest, a good reason to stay at the Holiday Inn is for a Madrid Real game or a stadium tour...or if you have business in the area, but for me it seems very far from the action. NYE's Times Square of Madrid is at the Puerta del Sol which is a bus, Metro or taxi ride from Holiday Inn.

The hotel is in a nice area, but not in the touristic centre. However, public transportation between the hotel and the centre is very good. The fastest way is to take the subway: take the line 10 at Santiago Bernabéu station and get off at Gran Vía station, and you will be in the middle of everything in just 10-15 minutes. Line 10 is new, safe and fast, and the trains frequency varies from 2 to 6 minutes, depending on the time.

From the airport you can also use the subway, as robert suggested. The line number is the 8, to Nuevos Ministerios. Nuevos Ministerios is quite close to your hotel, so you can either walk from there or transfer to line 10 for just one stop, to Santiago Bernabéu station.

If you want to see a map of Madrid subway, visit www.metromadrid.es. The subway opens at 6:30am and closes at 1:30/2am. The website of the public buses is www.emtmadrid.es. They work 24 hours (from 12pm to 6am, there are special services). If you prefer taxis, in Madrid there are plenty (not as much as in NY!) and are not very expensive (about the same price than yours and much less than other European cities ones).

Thank you for the responses. The date is quickly approaching. I'm on a group tour, so did not have a choice in the selection of the hotel.

Is it convenient to take the metro from the airport to the hotel with one suitcase? I'll arrive at 11:00am. How much is the train ride?

There was conflicting recommendation on which line to use...the number 10 or the number 8.

I think FBV said it this way which is correct. Take Linea 8 from Barajas, the airport to Nuevos Ministerios which is near the Holiday

Inn.

However, when you are ready to go downtown take Linea 10 and transfer to get to Gran Via or Sol (these are two different stops.) I always avoid Gran Via stop because it is quite deep, elevator?, something is there that I don't like. Or maybe I should say, "Something used to be there, I didn't like." and I have avoided it eever since. Can anyone update who doesn't have a phobia about Gran Via stop?

Check yourself on www.metromadrid.es. Then on the right hand side of homepage, click on "plano" which is used for "map".

Single Metro ticket is 1E. A ticket that is good for 10 rides is 6.15E. What a deal!
