Look at taking the CERCANIAS train from Terminal 4. Study the map. Decide.

rental car is probably the most expensive and least convenient way to get into the city (driving in unfamiliar city, parking). Cercanias is your best bet, followed by taxi (taxi to the city from airport is a flat rate of €30, while Cercanias is less than €5)

I think it is better to stay in Madrid and the last day you go to pick up the car, maybe i'm not understanding the situation, why do you want to stay near the airport?

We are heading to Murcia so wanted to explore Madrid city 2 days before hand, I would want to pick up the rental car after the two days in Madrid, just not sure what the distance was to the city centre .

The airport is not the only place to pick up a rental car in Madrid. You could stay in the centre and pick your car up at Atocha, for example. If you want to drop it off at the airport after, I'm pretty certain there will be no extra charge.

If you only have two days in Madrid you will waste too much time, and miss out on so much by travelling from and to an airport hotel.

I suggest that you stay in the centre, enjoy the city both day and night without the need to worry about catching the last train back, or paying the one way €30 taxi fare. There really is nothing of interest around the airport and dining options are limited.

If you stay in the centre there is no need to head back to the airport to collect a hire car. You can reserve and collect a hire car from any of the main car hire companies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar) at Atocha station, which is located near to the centre and is well located for accessing the motorway network. Additionally, Hertz has another large office located at Calle Tomas Breton, which is also good for accessing the motorway network.

Also, beware renting from companies offering cheap deals as you will most likely be stung for additional charges. Avoid the likes of OK, Goldcar. ........ see historic negative posts on this forum. Most of these companies do not actually have their cars on site and drive customers to an off airport location.

Take a look at Hostal Persal on Plaza del Angel. This is a good central location which will enable you to make the most of your time, and not too far from Atocha from where you can collect a hire car.

This is a hostal, not to be confused with a backpacking hostel. A hostal is more like a small hotel type guesthouse. Many offer good value in central locations, so a good option for those on a budget.

Alternatively, take a look at booking.com where you can search according to your budget and criteria.

I would not stay at a hotel at the airport because the only thing you can see there are other airport hotels. Better to stay downtown.
