Where to stay in Auckland other than CBD

We will be in Auckland for 3 nights prior to a cruise in November and have been looking at accommodation in CBD. While It would be nice to be in CBD close to restaurants etcs. we will be out and about most of day looking around(have car) and considering cost of parking at accommodation in city was wondering if there were alternatives. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Parnell is a lovely heritage suburb and the Rose Gardens will be in bloom then. Lots of nice restaurants in Parnell Road as well.

Some people like Ponsonby and there are a few motels down the Harbour Bridge end.

Takapuna and Devonport would be nice as well but they are on the North Shore and a bit further out. However both have great shops, restaurants, cafes, beaches and Devonport has Mt Victoria for a nice walk and an awesome view.

Parnell as mentioned is a very good base.

Kohimarama has a motel and is a lovely seaside suburb tucked in between Mission Bay and St Heliers.

Otherwise Epsom and Greenlane have many motels and are popular areas for cafes, shops, proximity to the central city, Newmarket shops, and motorways.

If you're happy with staying at Greenlane, I was very impressed with my stay at Knights Inn - plenty of parking, nice room,s next to a posh supermarket and close to major roads and motorways but far enough away that their nose doesn't bother you.
