Sorry ecosun there is no train to Miranda and I doubt very much that there is a regular bus that passes by either, it's a little off the beaten track. You may be a little disappointed when you get there anyway as most of the shore birds have migrated to the Northern Hemisphere by now. If you do manage to find a way to get there make sure it coincides with high tide, otherwise most of the birds are way, way out on the mudflats which aren't passable on foot.
Have you vistied Tiritiri Matangi Island- a native bird reserve just north of Auckland city? It's well worth a visit if you are a bird watcher. You can catch the Fullers ferry to it from downtown Auckland.

PS- it's also spelt Pokeno(and don't catch a bus to the Pokeno township if you find one, it's miles away from Miranda in totally the wrong direction)
