Car theft in Montreal and Quebec

For everyone wondering about car theft lately. Thought it's time to make a sticky for the MTL FAQ.

What deters theft? TAG tracking system. Also combination of multiple other anti theft measures such as steering wheel lock, brake lock, hidden kill switch, IGLA / Ghost immobilizer, pulling out fuses, RFID blocking key storage, Sherlock OBD2 port blocker, etc.

Vehicles from out of province are targeted as they seem to be less likely to have tracking systems installed.

Where are the vehicles going? Africa. Via the port. NEW CARS are the most wanted.

Do not drive to Montreal, fly only. Our friends had their SUV stolen while parked with the downtown hotel valet service. They and their 1 year old had a big problem getting back home to the IS.

I feel like it is really important to put things in perspective. While car theft has gone up in the recent years, it has gone up from an all time low. The ratio of number of cars/theft was similar in 2023 than what it was in 2008, and much, much lower than in the late 1990s/early 2000s. While car theft can be problematic, it is not as catastrophic as it appears. @JeffQc while that's true, car theft is not as high as the 90s... People took a lot more steps to protect themselves in the 90s. People think that modern cars are harder to steal but that is hardly the case anymore.

The fact remains that US tourists coming here are targeted. And Canadian tourists going to the north eastern US are targeted there as well. Always has been like this. But now it's worse than it's been in a long time.

That's too bad. 7379 in not even two months, and the ability to ship them to Africa must mean its a pretty big organization operating out of Montreal which is more concerning than car theft alone. Presumably, it wouldn't be that hard to monitor the port for stolen cars to shut down that racket but these are likely not the type of people that will get a paper route or wait tables if their current 'job' dries up.

Note the article is dated October, 2023, so the number of vehicle thefts is for 2023, not 2024. And it's a huge issue across the country, not just in Quebec. Toronto and Ontario are not that far behind in terms of the number of vehicles stolen, although the make of vehicles tends to be a bit different in Toronto, and thefts seem to be from homes, rather than public parking lots. Interesting piece from the CBC a few weeks ago if anyone is interested.
