Simpson Bay or Orient Beach??

We are planning a low-key trip to SXM in May and want to venture somewhere new. We stayed at Sonesta Great Bay last year. We would really like to rent a condo/apartment or small hotel, very low key.. Which do you prefer and why? Are the restaurants on the French side more expensive? Is it safe to walk around at night? What about access to grocery stores? Which beach has calmer water? I am not a fan of big waves and heavy wind.

Orient has more waves and can be windy. Based on your post, I think you should stay on Simpson Bay Beach. Look at the La Siesta condos.

Restaurants can be more expensive, but you can save if you pay cash USD. Many places will take $1:€1. You can eat cheaper if you know where to go. However, you're only 30 min away from Simpson Bay if you stay in Orient, so you can always drive to the Dutch side if you wish.

There are restaurants and a small grocery in Orient, but not nearly as much as Simpson Bay. I much prefer it, though, and am willing to drive when we want to go elsewhere.

We have only stayed on the French side but have eaten on both the French and the Dutch. IMO the French restaurants were more expensive.

Orient Village is very safe and there are several little restaurants in the complex. Orient can be windy and the waves can be a little rough once in a while, but on those days you can go to Grand Case, Pinel, Anse Marcel, or Le Galion (all are a short drive away). We loved staying there this year; it was a 3 minute walk to the beach or to the village square, and a 10 minute ride to Grand Case for more dining options. We are booked there again next year for 3 weeks. Enjoy!

We like to stay on simpson bay beach because of all the dinning and nightlife close by for evenings. We rent a car and travel to other beaches in daylight hours and save night driving for close by places. We love orient beach and go there a few times per week, but probably too quiet at night for our taste.

I LOVE Orient over Simpson Bay, any day of the week. It's all bout taste however. It's safe on both sides and yes, more expensive on the French side, but you get what you pay for!

Good luck!
