La Gomera - Best 'resort'/area to stay

Hello, Going on a special anniversary trip towards end of April 2016. We like walking and good food but are concerned that the weather will be cooler in the north. What about Playa de Santiago? Good connection to other areas etc etc. We are happy self-catering/apartments etc. A pool would be nice. Hope I'm not asking too much. Any advice welcome. Thanks

Are you going to hire a car? If so Play de Santiago woiuld be fine although it is a very small resort with limited restaurants and bars. Be aware that it tqakes a long while to get anywhere on La Gomera as the roads are steep and windy.

If you don't have a car Valle Gran Rey or San Sebastián would suit better. VGR is more of a resort with good beaches and more restaurants and bars although I am not personally keen on the hippy vibe which still pervades the place. San Sebastián would be my choice. Much more of a proper Spanish town and all the buses and ferries depart from there. Some good restaurants and bars too and an excellent beach.

Playa Santiago is the warmest resort on La Gomera although you should be fine anywhere in April. San Sebastian has more restaurants and good beaches, Valle Gran Rey is great although a little more touristy. Not greatly so on La G thankfully. I agree about the hippy vibe but I have never found them a problem.

Hiring a car is a great option. Driving is painless here with little traffic, no parking fees or traffic lights. That is assuming you don't mind the windy roads of course. If you have a car then San Sebastian is a good option and you could maybe consider the parador which I would book on a B & B basis so as to experiance the local eateries. I am not aware of your age but if over 55 the Paradors do offer discounts at certain time sof the year at certain venues. Ask if the offer 'golden days' yes I know its a corny expresion but 30 % or more is not to be sneezed at!

Good luck!
