Easy Beech forest walk with small kids?

We will be visiting the Queenstown / Milford region in January with our two kids, aged 3 and 1. Is there a good place to see Beech forest that is easily accessible with the children? Maybe a short walk? Our 3 year old is a sturdy little hiker and we have a carry pack for our 1 year old. Thanks

Welcome to the forum Cath :)

There is a short walk from the Milford carpark to the wharf which goes through a small section of beech forest …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/…

mirror lakes is another good walk …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/…

from Queenstown - drive to Glenorchy then continue to either Kinloch (great place for lunch) - expect sandflies - or to Paradise - sandflies galore!! - there is great walking in the trees - spectacular scenery.

Lake Sylvan would be a good one in the Glenorchy area. You can view the description in the link WL posted for Kinloch Lodge: http://www.kinlochlodge.co.nz/day-walks.html

The Lake Gunn loop walk that leaves from Cascade Creek on the Milford Road would be an excellent walk to do with children. It's a beautiful walk with thick lime green moss dripping from every branch and covering the forest floor. There's plenty of bird life too. Here's the link-

If you are going to Mt Cook there is Governors Bush.

In Arthurs Pass there is Devils Punchbowl - about 1 hour return.

In Glenorchy there are a few places for good short walks into the beech forest. Along the Glenorchy - Queenstown road there is a short hike down to Bob's cove, the car park is easy to find and takes you right into the forest right from the start, look at around 15min at most to get down to the waters edge. The Mt Chriton trail also takes you into the beech forest but is a little longer, perhaps look at walking only to Sam summers hut rather than the loop. Once you get to Glenorchy there is a great walk already mentioned to Lake Sylvan, lots of native birds and a beautiful place, look at about 1hr to 1hr n half return for that one.

Can be a few sandflies, dont let it put you off, clothing that covers, a little breeze and you'll not notice it.

Thanks. I think we will try Mirror Lakes and Lake Sylvan. Really looking forward to it. We have been warned many times about the sand flies so will definitely take along some insect repellant.

Just in case you're unaware, the Mirror Lakes aren't a walk, they right on the side of the road with a platform boardwalk along the edge, about 5 mins to do the round trip.
