Rail Strikes this Summer & Fall in Europe?

We will be in Germany, France and Spain this September and was wondering if there has been any talk about rail strikes? We was in Germany last year and had to change our plans the last minute because of rail strikes. Any strikes in these countries this year?

Thanks in advance!

There have been recent strikes in Germany, France and Spain. The disputes between unions and the government run railways, governments in general, are long lasting and bitter. There is no way to predict their tactics, but make sure your travel insurance covers such eventualities, such as having to stay two extra nights in Barcelona as I had to do last year, having to fly from there to Basel rather than go by train through France and also having to cancel previously booked rooms in Lyon.

having flexible hotel reseravtions might also be worth investigating, although admittedly sometimes this is quite difficult in busy places at peak times. Alternatively the likes of Premier inn (UK/ Germany) or hotel b b often have semi flex rates that you can change the date of the booking for free at almost the last minute which is nearly as good.

The biggest concern to me is train travel. I always book flexible rates for hotels, so that is not a problem for me. Trying to get your money back from DB is a pain, especiallly if you want it refunded to the credit card you paid with.

Hi Cubsur

I wonder if you'd be willing to say what insurance company you use please? I'll be travelling to France with lots of scope for connections to fail so need to ensure I have robust insurance for that. TIA.

I have travel insurance with a Portuguese company. As am I not a UK resident many UK insurance companies told me I am not eligible, so I stopped looking.

SNCF were very prompt with their refunds when I was affected by the strikes last year, so my insurance was not actually needed for that aspect.

As Cubsur has said, most Insurance Companies, certainly in the UK and possibly the rest of Europe, can't sell to people who are not residents of the Country they are based in. I'm sure a search on sites such as Go Compare etc would turn something up, although most Insurance policies specifically exclude anything caused by Strikes.

SNCF Connect were very prompt in issuing a refund for our Turin to Paris trip last September following the landslide in France.

We obviously had to re-route via Switzerland at short notice - trains and hotels needed etc.

Our insurance company however, would not cough up even a penny, as we were not next to the landslide when it happened... :)

A lot of travel insurance is geared to air travel rather than rail travel.

it is indeed strange that travel insurers won't cover train travel, even though tickets can cost much more than air travel. There must be a specialist company somewhere that offers cover against cancelled trains, strikes, flood, fire and pestilence.
