Hi I’m going to maspalomas at the end of this month and looking for the best guy friendly hotels for people in my age range, and maybe a travel buddy if possible
I see you've posted in the local forum. This forum is more about planning travel and less about specific destination needs. It should also be stated clearly that TA forums are not the best place to seek travel buddies, especially since your own profile doesn't list a location. Also, nobody is vetted here. The local forum should be a good place to ask about where the locals hang out.
When I travel I end up hanging out with people of all ages. I've never stayed anywhere that everyone was over 60. (I wouldn't like that at all.) But if that is a priority you might want to look into finding a travel organizations aimed at seniors.
If you haven’t already looked there do read this post about finding a travel buddy
As it says seeking a stranger on an unmonitored public forum is risky. You won’t know who or what they are and likewise they won’t know if you’re who you say you are.
Just a point as everyone is different but - I stayed at an hotel that was adults only as it was Christmas.
By the middle of the week I was desperate for children! It was largely very definitely over 60's and they were grumpy, had to have their 'own' seats for the day to do puzzles and glare at passers by. A duller lot I have never met.
I've been thinking on this and the only place I've seen or been where everyone is over 60 is at independent Senior Living apartment complexes here in the US.
Hello Kirk and welcome to the solo forum.
I actually think you don’t need a hotel in Maspalomas that specifically caters to the over 60’s. Now that the schools are back, the Canaries will be mostly adults, be they couples, friends or solo travellers.
This is the start of the shoulder season, and one of the most popular and sociable times for adults to travel.
I’ve no doubt at all that you’ll meet lots of other people not only in your hotel, but also in the local pubs and bars and on any excursions you might book.
Having said that, I’d point out that the Canaries are also a very popular destination for adults from Germany , Ireland ,Holland as well as the UK. Quite an international crowd and if you can speak a few words in another language, you’ll break the ice. I’m always amazed at how many other European s can speak such good English.
To help you focus on potential hotels that attract higher numbers of solo travellers, I’d suggest checking the reviews on Tripadvisor specifically submitted by solo travellers. You can also check the number of reviews also submitted by other languages too. This will give you an idea of how international that hotel might be.
Some hotels may still be running in house activities, like pool sports, darts competitions, bingo nights etc. All of which add to the sociability and entertainment.
I’d suggest looking at the various hotels in Maspalomas, using the filters to read the reviews by other travellers, and also looking at how many of the reviews have been submitted by nationality.
Once you’ve found a few that appeal, you could also ask on the local forum if there are good pubs and bars in that area.
In my experience, other travellers love to chat about their holidays, places they’d recommend, places to avoid!
Couples also love to chat, so please don’t think that couples always want to be exclusive.
A word of caution though. I tend to find groups of young people less sociable than older travellers, especially younger women. As a woman, most people are happy to chat to me, but as you’re an older man, you may not find groups of younger women willing to engage in conversation.
If you were 80 you would probably like it. 🤭
