Kenya Safari recommendations please!

Hi all,

I am looking for personal recommendations of Travel agents and tour operators who can cater to solo female traveller from Australia to embark on a wildlife safari tour in Kenya.

I am looking to travel by myself to be part of a group, female only group is a preference but others will work too. I am looking at around 7-10 days tour with decent and safe accommodations and amazing wildlife views.

Thank you.

Firstly, why Kenya and why a group?

I'm a regular solo safari goer (3 times a year) and my best advice would be to get a tour operator to arrange a bespoke itinerary using camps that offer game drives as part of the package (often called "fly in" camps). Many of these also have communal dining, and you will share game drives with other guests, so it's quite sociable, but unlike a group tour you can pick your own itinerary and you will not be stuck with the same people for the whole trip.

As a solo, the key to getting a trip like that at a more reasonable price is to travel off season, when many camps don't charge single supplements. But to be honest, I think there are better safari options for the solo traveler in Zambia or Botswana. I've just come back from an amazing low season safari (Jan) in Botswana.

For agents to put this together, I use Expert Africa in the UK for most trips (including Zambia and Kenya). They do have a consultant in New Zealand who you can chat to in roughly your time zone. For Botswana, I use Safari Specialists in Maun.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything Stokeygirl said.

I would add that Tribes Travel put together a memorable safari for me in Zambia one March. I really like travelling in the "green season" as the hippos were happy, I saw everything I went to Zambia to see and the sight of the young male baboons cannonballing from a tree branch into a pond at one of the resorts will, happily, stay with me all my life.

The camps were well chosen, the lodgings were comfortable and the food was delicious.

Yes, I think Leagle used Robin Pope safaris camps, which are one of the best options around for solo travelers. Actually, in their case, there is no need to travel off season as they have a no single supplement policy all year round, even in peak season, which is a rarity. You can book Robin Pope camps through an independent operator or even directly, but there's usually no cost benefit to this.

In Botswana, Kwando safaris have great solo deals from Nov to March. They don't take direct bookings, you have to book via an operator.

I'd say these two sets of camps are probably the best solo safari options I've found.
