Butterflies: Maybe they're not gone?

After a report stating that Mariposa butterflies are down by 80% in California last year (leading many of us to think they were virtually extinct), the good news is that they've shown up in much larger numbers in Mexico (various climate-related reasons):

And there's tourism!

Since Mexico uses so many fewer resources per person, and since there are many low energy options in staying in Mexico, any trip to Mexico (esp if buying carbon credits to offset the flight) can be way less energy intensive than a trip to the US.

But if in the US, one can see butterflies without driving off a typical tourist route (and without hurting butterfly habitat):

California is a signatory to the Paris Accord and is one of the most eco-friendly states in the US (on par with most European nations, I guess) and Santa Barbara is very energy conscious (great public transport; easily accessible by train - a rare thing in the US)>

Anyway, you can go see butterflies either place.

Thanks for the shout-out to our annual Butterflies Alive! exhibit, LeBiscuit D! We look forward to opening it this year on May 25. Our Butterfly Pavilion will be open through September 2, and this year we expect to host many exciting species.
