I am interested in a budget minded vacation. I am not interested in Tourist Traps where everyone seems to go. A nice quiet place, where local accommodations, groceries, beer is reasonable. Somewhere off the beaten path, hanging with the locals is fine. Premium hotels or all-inclusives are not appealing to me.

Some good spots we enjoyed in the past were Caye Caulker and San Ignacio. Also Peru where we rentaed a local house in old Cusco for 2 weeks. Keep in mind these were all pre-covid vacations and super affordable once we touched down there. I am hearing stories where you can eat, sleep and drink like a king in parts of Asia for very affordable prices. Thailand? Vietnam? Is this true? Airline prices are what they are. Not really concerned about the cost to get there. Just want to have a good time. Experience local people and culture. Not be paying super-inflated gringo prices for dinner, hotels, and drinks.

We are open to many areas and types of vacations. From the Arctic to the Cook Islands. From Asia to Greenland and all points in between. Your experience and comments are appreciated.

Goa springs to mind. I’ve not been nor do I want to but a friend goes every year & stays in a beach bungalow which is as cheap as chips, food too. All very basic & rustic.

Not worrying about airfare is ignoring what is often the largest cost or second largest cost. If 50% of your budget goes to airfare or 50% of it goes to food it's the same money out of your pocket.

Also with shorter trips those far away destinations mean spending valuable time on travel. Most people the one thing they have the least of is time.

Final thing is things like food often depend on taste. Sure you might find the local street food cheap but if you want home cooking or just a Coke you might find prices much higher.

My 2 cents is that I agree with nzentena regarding the overall transportation budget. But when I dig a little deeper, I can find bargains and budget-friendly options in most places. I've been in SEA multiple times, as well. Saying that, this comment does come up and there are some websites to help compare one place vs. another. But my caution is still that there are places for tourists and places for locals, and many outlets to purchase things. In addition to reading and research, I encourage you to compile a spreadsheet, as well.
