Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were staying at the Chateau for 3 nights and wanted a cheap easy meal for the Sunday. Had our hearts set on the lamb shanks but they had sold out. This was the first weekend post Covid19 lockdown and supplies had ran out. Instead we had the roast of the day. The beef was really good. Often beef can be well overcooked at pubs but it was a really good meal for $15.
Service was good and all up a very reasonably priced dinner along with house Pinot Noir to accompany the food. Would definitely return

We took a stab in the dark with this place and didn't hold any expectations as it was literally chosen for convenience. We just crossed fingers and toes that on a Sat night it'd be suitable for our 2 young kids, parents and a variety of palettes. For a busy night we felt that the service was exceptional, the manager kept us well informed about the wait and when we eventually did order, we didn't have to wait too long before the meals were delivered to our table. As a bonus, while we did have to wait for food, there is a mini golf course to keep restless kids occupied. Thankfully we had a stunning evening for it and a glorious view of the mountain range. The food was really good pub grub... Sticky rubs, fish burger, pasta, nachoes, garlic bread, sticky date pudding were all polished off! Very generous portions - plenty to fuel us for the Crossing hike the following morning. Thanks Schnapps - wouldn't hesitate to stop in again when next in town.

Went in about 7.30pm for a meal. It was quite busy. Went to order to find you have to queue to order. People in front of me had waited 45 minutes just to order I wanted about 25. Apparently they don’t like too many orders at the same time. Eventually got the burgers. They were OK.

We had dinner here because of the failure of the restaurant next door. We were told to take a seat and watch for the lights above the menu being turned on which meant the kitchen was open for orders again. It was just my daughter and me travelling together. The lights came on and we went up to order. The guy started to take my order, someone from the kitchen came and quietly said something to him he rolled his head back and walked off without saying a word to me. I stood and waited. Another guy came to take my order. We ordered two entrees without a problem and eventually managed two mains after my daughters fourth choice was available as her first three attempts were sold out. We were given a number and we took a seat to wait.
An entree of the people who ordered after us came out maybe 5-10 minutes after ordering.
5 minutes later two more entrees of the people who ordered after us came out.
5-10 minutes after that the main courses of the people who ordered before us came out.
5 minutes later our mains came out. I said to the bloke can you tell me when our entrees are coming please?
He didn’t really respond verbally, looked a bit shocked at the question, went away, looked at something up by the till and then went wandering around the restaurant looking for something I could only assume was our entrees.
Eventually he went to the table of the people who had ordered after us, picked up the two entrees that had been sitting on their table for at least 15 minutes and moved them over to our table and walked off barely uttering an apology.
The onion rings and garlic bread were virtually stone cold which made both pretty unpleasant to eat. The garlic bread at $9 (I think) and the onion rings at a slightly better $6 were expensive even had they been hot but at second hand and cold were distinctly subpar and unpleasant to eat.
We ate some of the entrees while our mains sat going cold. The chips were soggy and not very palatable. My fish batter was also soggy and undercooked. My daughter said her burger was quite nice.
All in all a pretty dismal experience only just better than than The Spiral place next door where after 25 minutes we hadn’t even had orders taken and really angry we ended up walking out.
My advice, if you don’t have to stay at National Park Village don’t. You’ll find better accommodation, food choices and service elsewhere.
Disappointing all round. Next time I’ll spend my hard earned cash elsewhere.

Whilst Schnapps looks like an excellent bar with a reasonably priced food menu, we called in for afternoon coffee. This was a good call as we had an excellent cappuccino and a chocolate brownie with a great view of the mountains through a picture window on a comfy sofa. Friendly service completed the experience.

Was yummy as! Staff were welcoming and very helpful, we went in and 10 mins later the entire place was packed! Good music playing plenty to do. Everyone else was enjoying their food, they have so many options on the menu you just don't know where to start their portions are huge. The Maori guy that served us was s awesome host.

Terrible service we had to wait a whole 40 minutes before we could order our food so the kitchen could ' catch up ' on orders . The lady with the pigtails serving us kept referring to a light to come on and then we could order. We then ordered two very expensive drinks and waited for over an hour and a half for our food. The drinks and food were very over priced and my poor kids were starving in the end as we ate way past their bed time we should have left when we got the chance. Awful awful service and food save your money go elsewhere !!!

This was one of the few options to eat out that were open. The meals consisted of large serves of comfort food.
I had to give the waitress my driver's license as security before she would take my meal order. I guess that serving meals is a secondary business, with their main function being a bar.
The décor was dated and pretty worn out. There were fly buzzing around our table.
The staff were pleasant and friendly with an element of local spirit that comes from eating in a tiny town during a time when there are not too many customers.
The food was functional and par for the course. Nothing special, but also nothing to fault.

A relaxed pub conveniently located on the main road in National Park. Usual pub cuisine but was also pleasantly surprised by the vege choices. I had a vegan curry for dinner and enjoyed it, very generous portion sizes.
Value for money is pretty good too because most places are very overpriced around there.

Great place to relax, unwind and rehydrate after traversing the Tongariro crossing. Good food, great hosts and lovely atmosphere. The courtyard with games was a highlight. Sticky toffee dessert topped it all off perfectly (but you may need to share this one, it’s huge!)

Visited after doing the WHanganui River Journey during the busy holiday period and enjoyed our best meal that week. Good menu and choice of drinks. Service was adequate but a bit abrupt. The window areas could do with a good clean.

We visited this wonderful bar after our Tongariro crossing tramp. It was only their second night open in level two but you would not have know. Staff were friendly and the meals were absolutely lovely. My wife had chicken Thai red curry which was very authentic I had the mountain burger which very tasty. I recommend a visit if you want a warm friendly atmosphere and great food and service

We had dinner here after it was recommended by our hotel. We were not disappointed. I ordered the ribs and they were great, perfectly cooked, piping hot, and with lots of sticky sauce as advertised. My partner had the chicken curry and the chicken was tender and the coconut sauce was flavorful. We shared the goat cheese, beet, and walnut salad, and it was good except for the hot red onions. Service was OK; you order from the bar and they bring the food to your table.

Went here for an evening meal. Had to wait in the queue for half an hour before order could be placed. When tried to order our choice of meal - were told that they ran out. Order was placed for alternate meals. Order arrived fifteen minutes late. The vegetarian burger was cold chicken buffalo wings didn't taste like buffalo wings at all.

What an absolute rip off! $25 for a breakfast buffet and watch the game. No mushrooms, no proper sausages, dried up hash browns, bacon that disappeared seconds after it was replenished, then on top of that we had to go outside to a coffee cart wait for half an hour for coffees that we still had to pay for. Considering there's no competition anywhere close by these guys are creaming it and I won't be organizing any groups traveling to National Park in the future, we'll head to Ohakune instead. Total waste of money and a bad taste in my mouth.
