Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A Surprise hidden away in the hills in Federal NSW. A pleasant drive through the green countryside from the Gold Coast (1.5 hours from north GC) Doma Cafe provides a great setting for some Japanese infusion delight. All tables are outside , most with shade . Very rustic country setting but food is more upmarket - slightly more expensive side .
We had Tempura prawn salad and Chicken Karage salad . Both were delicious . We also had Iced cold infusion Coffee with coconut milk - Very tasty . Total price $63 for the 2 of us.
Service was very efficient considering there was a constant turnover of patrons looking for tables.
Thoroughly recommend for a morning drive and lunch . If coming from GC during summer don’t forget the daylight saving time difference as they close at 2.30pm NSW time.

I've recently moved to the area and have now been to Doma three weekends in a row for breakfast, including this weekend when we had visitors. It's a pretty place to sit and the menu is really interesting. The staff are really friendly and the food has all been lovely, I've had the haloumi breakfast burger twice and the french toast once, but my friends had a range of different meals and all enjoyed them. The coffee is wonderful, and we bought some takeaway fruit bread once which was delicious. When it's busier it did take a while to get our coffee but we weren't in a rush and were happy sitting enjoying the atmosphere. Recommend.

We have been regular visitors to Doma for a few years and I feel a little conflicted in leaving a negative review. We loved the food and atmosphere and were prepared to tolerate the longish drive and longer wait for a table.
Our most recent visit was disappointing. The restaurant is closed but takeaway continues. The menu focuses on burgers, with a handful of Japanese-style options. Prices are unchanged from when they offered table service.
So in the end we paid about $22 a head to sit on the grass in the park across the road and eat a burger. Even in the Byron area that seemed expensive. For comparison, a stylish cafe near an elevated roundabout in town charges half that. So if sitting on the grass eating a hamburger is what you’re after, maybe save yourself a drive.

The menu stated: Grilled Eggplant and salad. What I received after I paid, was the thinnest slice of eggplant possible, topped with what can only be described as foul tasting yellow tinged mashed potato (or something similar). The salad had Coriander in it, and no mention was made of that - they need to remember that there are thousands of people who hate Coriander.
After two bites, I took the meal back and said it was inedible and not what was on the menu. I was told "I will tell my boss". I was there for another 3/4 of an hour and no-one came near me.
At $19 this was one of the biggest rip-offs I have ever experienced.
Perhaps this restaurant could hire a copywriter to write the menu so that you know exactly what you're ordering.
Don't waste your time driving all the way to Federal.

Have loved going to doma regularly for years.
But today I met up with my partner for some sushi on my lunch break.
We ordered 4 sushi rolls and were told they would be 15-20min.
Service was good until we were left waiting for a while, I’m patient, a former hospo worker and have never complained or written a negative review before but when I noticed burgers and other cooked meals coming out for tables that had arrived 15min after us I checked my bank transactions and it had been 52 minutes.
When I went to check on our food with as minimal fuss as possible I simply stated it had been nearly an hour, the response I received was ‘oh it’s only been 45min’, which I feel was unnecessary and incorrect.
The sushi was then hastily dumped on our table with takeaway condiments and a sarcastic ‘sorry’ after the server had already turned her back and started walking away.
I do not feel comfortable continuing to recommend them constantly to everyone as I usually do.
Sort it out.

Zero customer service. Zero customer care. They take your money and then you're on your own.
1.5 hours for 6 takeaway sushi rolls is beyond outrageous.
There was no communication and clearly noone managing the place outside of the kitchen.
They keep on taking order after order when they have no capacity to fulfil them - that is a serious breach of trust in food service.
It's either arrogance or incompetence. Either way literally don't waste your time!!

This is the place most people come to when they visit Federal. Heard about it for ages so finally got there for lunch. At the moment no table service as the place is under construction. There are lots of sushi bowls, hand rolls, burgers etc and the food is fresh and tasty and healthy.

Domo cafe in Federal is well worth the scenic drive . The food is delicious and service friendly and prompt. We ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Salad, Katsu chicken burger, sushi roll & the salmon sashimi salad. All meals were enjoyed and beautifully prepared & fresh. The atmosphere was relaxed and we would definitely be back for lunch again!

This restaurant had ample outside seating. I visited on a cool day. There was a line up for ordering. A range of Aussie and Japanese food available. All looked scrumptious. Many people ordered burgers and coffee was also popular. Right next to the Federal general store. I will come again when not so busy. Closes at 3 on Sundays.

Outside tables, very casual lunch dining. Japanese inspired salads featuring tofu, eggplant etc. Also salmon sashimi with fresh greens. Ginger and wasabi to add. There are also burgers on the menu but we didn't try these. Quality of the food was great, and it seemed very fresh. Reasonable prices. Worth going out of your way for a casual but smart lunch close to Byron Bay.

There is no worst feeling of being told “We could ask the chef to alter this dish to make it vegan”. In today’s market, an eatery should have at least 1 vegan dish on the menu. Get with the program Doma. I was told by a snotty young girl with black hair and a nose ring to: “Stop complaining”. I was told this when I said to her: Not to worry “ after she needed to ask the chef if something could be made vegan. Vegans would just like to order from the menu just like everyone else. I won’t be back as previously to this time I also experienced very bad manners from an older woman with blond curly hair. She also was very rude to customers. Doma used to be nice but now it is just overpriced with horrible non-Japanese staff.

We were recommended to try this restaurant by our daughter, who is a real foodie. The Sashimi we enjoyed on our first visit was beautiful. The salad that came with it was so crisp and fresh. It was so good we returned and my husband had teriyaki chicken which melted in the mouth with great flavour. I had sushi which was topped with fresh grilled scallops. Amazing, on both occasions we had matcha mousse dessert with homemade vanilla bean icecream. To think this hidden gem is in a tiny, tiny village in the hinterland behind Byron bay. Highly recommended. Wonderful friendly and smiley staff.

First return since preCovid so a few changes such as the parking area, ordering process, new toilets and no BYO. What hadn’t changed was the quality of the food - it’s still excellent. Shared a variety of dishes. The seared wild caught kingfish sushi plate was a highlight. The blueberry and yuzu cake was outstanding. As we were staying locally we returned the next morning for excellent coffee.

After a week of boring predictable non/changing breakfasts on an island I was ready for something different and this fit the bill. Unlike the bacon, eggs, mushrooms and tomato that was served up everyday on the island this was an interesting vegan breakfast consisting of fermented vegetables (beetroot, eggplant with cashew cheese, beans with edamame and corn, pickled radish and zucchini) served with organic brown rice with split peas. The coffee was good too.
This cafe how has an attractive covered open outdoor space to eat which is lovely and appropriate in a pandemic.
Couldn’t resist buying some fermented bread with Gorgonzola and walnuts to take home.
