My wife and i were taken down to Raglan for a look around while visiting from the UK. We each ordered a different type of fish and shared a large platter of chips. The battered fish was cooked to perfection and the chips crispy.

“Two crumbed dory and chips, please.” This was the $17.50 deal. Ten or so minutes later our number was called and my wife and I sat down to eat on a mild summery evening towards the end of February. This was Raglan Fish situated on the wharf a couple of kilometres from Raglan’s main street. We watched the boats in the harbour, the people waiting for their order, the two or three men fishing, the rushing, outgoing tide… OK, OK. But what about the meal itself! Totally delicious - crisp, perfectly cooked and plenty. The seagulls perched on the posts and railings had a lean night as we didn’t throw them any tidbits.

The only fish and chip shop open in Raglan and with only 2 to 3 staff they were crazy busy. Despite being busy the food was cooked to perfection and was well worth the wait. The fish was delicious and the potato fritters and kumara chips were the best we’ve ever had. Highly recommend!

Waited 55 minutes - which was okay as we figured out they considering they were catering the sunset cruise. Got in the car with our order and for 10 or 11.50 the grilled fish portion was shockingly tiny. Paid for two aioli and only got one. Chip and Kumar chop portions fine. Super disappointing and won’t be back.

The chips were really well cooked and delicious and my partner really enjoyed his fish. The wait was quite long for food but we did go at a very busy time for dinner. The problem was that one of us is a vegetarian and we requested the fish was wrapped separately to the other items and they ignored this request. At the till the worker wrote the request down and we saw that it was written on the screen and added to the order notes going through. However when the order came whoever had put it together had completely ignored this. The fish was directly on top of the chips in the centre of the order and was touching all of the other items we ordered. It was a very simple request that made a massive difference for us trying to eat our food. Very disappointing that something that would take them very little time to do was ignored.

Decided on fish and chips for dinner and decided on a favourite place at Raglan. Always had lovely fish and chips there, should be good. Well, they had the Gurnard and Hapuka showing as not available, yet there was plenty in the cabinet. Asking about getting that and having it cooked, got the response - No, the boss won't allow the fish on the cabinet to be cooked on the premises, we would have top buy it and take it home, and buy the chips there. Why they wouldn't let me buy the fish from the cabinet and for them to batter and cook it was never properly explained. Yes I accept that there would be a cost for that. Ok so we ordered 2 Tarakihi and 1 chips. They show that as a $19 deal. So I order and the total comes to $20. I query and it has to be re entered as a "deal". ok whatever. We get the meal and sit down to eat. The first thing noticed is the fish is very very strong and not at all pleasant, it was obviously old. We could not stomach eating the fish so took it home for the compost bin. Thought about taking it back and complaining, but figured with the logic and approach over buying the fish in the cabinet and cooking it we figured it would go nowhere and be a total waste of breath on our part.

Very poor service.Had to wait1 hour for 2 pieces of fish and chips. Chips were inedible and fish overcooked and batter soggy.Very poor quality and advertisement for N.Z food.Needs to be inspected for cleanliness as well. Should be closed down.

Food would have been good except it was way over cooked. Almost burnt. When this was pointed out they admitted it was over cooked but was not interested in 'fixing it by doing a new order. This place has been good in the past but not now. And customer Service is rubbish.

So many things wrong with our fish and chips tonight. Soggy chips, hard undercooked potato fritters and greasy fish which also had way to many bones in it. For very expensive fish and chips you atleast want to be able to eat it. I wont even start on the staff and lack of customer service. We wont be back.

I am gluten free and have been craving battered fish for around five years!! I spoke on the phone with one of the grill chefs Dean and I offered to bring my own gluten free flour to make me some battered fish. He agreed, this was before the busy hours so was lucky to be treated with GF battered fish. Was so so yummy! I’ll remember that moment for awhile. I hope they bring GF battered fish to the menu. For those that are not celiac and just intolerant it’s a blessing. I highly recommend this fish and chip shop for the good crew, feed and atmosphere.

We had the fish burgers, gurnad fish, chips, hot dogs and Pineapple fritters. Omg everything so yummy and fresh it melts in your mouth! Lemon included👌🏽 Was better than Monganui Fish n Chips up north! Will definitely go back.

Fish was small, not drained of excess fat, chips we’re anaemic lacking salt, dod not advise of wait times . Very average nor really worthy of the hype. Best in the region but that’s not saying a lot. Very very average even when ordering specific fish!

Delicious fish and chips. Not greasy, but the right kind of oily. Perfectly flaky succulent fish on the inside, with crispy batter on the outsider. We tried the trevally and the snapper, and they were both great. The chips were on the softer side, which I don't mind, although just a tad more crisp would have been appreciated. They have extra sea salt on the table, and have tartare, aioli, and tomato sauces. The seating is a bit rustic and unkempt, but it all works to provide a very authentic vibe. The view of the harbour is stunning. The ultimate go-to place for a meal in Raglan.

We had a drink at the wharf bar and kitchen and put in a phone order at 6.20 pm for fish and chips. We were told half an hour so all good. Waited another 15 minutes, finished our drink, went across and queued up to pay. Discovered the muppet who took our phone order forgot the scoop of chips. So finally at 7.20 we got our order because we were pushed back in the queue. Not good enough Raglan Fish. Suggest if you do a phone order get them to repeat back to you what you have ordered. The saving grace for getting 3 stars is that the fish was fresh and delicious.

We were impressed with the service at this cafe; a friendly girl took our order. The chips were just perfect, crisp on the outside and soft inside and veyr fresh. The fish was good too, and would have come straight off the boats tied up at the wharf outside the cafe. You can eat your fish and chip at the tables provided by the cafe.
