About
Nestled on the shores of the upper Waitemata, The Riverhead is steeped in local history and was a vital part of the development of early New Zealand. Prior to The Riverhead being built on this site, Thomas Deacon, the original owner, owned a pub on the point just below where The Riverhead now stands. The early Maori used this landing point as the place to disembark and portage their waka across land to the Kumeu River to get easier access to the lands in the Far North. Early immigrants then used this same route to travel north, disembarking at Helensville and continuing by ship north via the Kaipara Harbour.

After hearing great things about the The Riverhead Tavern, we decided to pop in for Labour Day lunch. As the car park was pretty full, we weren't too sure we'd be welcome, however, there was no problem at all and we were promptly accommodated. We...More

We so glad you came out on Labour Weekend...It can get quite busy but we can usually fit in people who take the chance of a table without a booking. So glad you enjoyed our menu choices. BTW we will have new summer additions on...More

I'd love to work my way through the excellent menu but on my second visit I still haven't got past the pork ribs. My wife has twice had the excellent beef cheeks - pity she doesn't eat pork.More

That's funny! If you like it, stick with it, I say! One of the things I like to order for lunch is all (or most, depending on numbers) of the entrees and a side salad and share it with the company I'm in. That way...More

We cruised to the Tavern on the Red Boat for lunch. All four of us had the fish and chips and salad meal which was excellent along with the service. We would highly recommend. A most enjoyable day.

We have a great wine list that we have carefully selected ourselves. It includes some of New Zealand's finest and I'm very pleased to say, some of our local wines rate right up there. So it's a relatively easy thing to match the quality wines...More

Hi Chris, yes the dock is accessed by a 'bush stairway with 50 steps' which we are very careful to communicate to all the ferry traffic. We do have a lot of tables both inside and out which we never book out completely. If we...More
