Hands down the best pies I’ve eaten in NZ. I ordinarily shy away from pies around the country as either the filling is buffered with all sorts of unrecognisable or unknown or the pastry isn’t right. My partner (a kiwi) claims his steak and cheese...was outstanding and I shared two different chicken pies with our little guy. He ate just over half...and I tell you, the chicken was great quality, soft, chunky and very meaty and well seasoned. Pastry had enough flake and crisp without falling all over the place and the underside was not stodgy. Very impressed. Thank you.More
Looking for a golden brown, thick pastry pie that’s packed full of flavour? No need to worry about the contents spilling these pies are made to be eaten on the go, perfect for tradies or pie connoisseurs.
The “Vanilla Slice” was amazing. At first glance...it gives off the impression it is merely a vanilla slice whilst the pastry on the outside is hiding a thick flavoursome and rich custard. To be quite honest it gave me flashbacks to when I was in Holland trying the local cakes and slices. I would recommend this to anyone.More
The European Bakery produces traditional breads and other items like pastries, pies all with a European flair. The bread has that crusty texture and great flavours. Add a reasonable coffee and it’s a good place for a snack or a takeaway. Staff seemed to be...more than helpful. Judging by the customers for many it is a routine visit.
Upside great bakery items, reasonable prices
Downside is I have to travel 50km to get to it
Will I go back, whenever possibleMore
If you only go to the Antonius bakery for one thing, I highly recommend the Original Swiss loaf. This bread is pretty much the best store -bought bread I've ever had. It cuts beautifully, lasts for ages (it's a sourdough), and has a perfect texture...-not too heavy, not too light, and really nice moisture content. Superb for sandwiches.
Be careful though -there are all sorts of tempting little treats in the cabinet too (I love the nut corners -very sustaining and yummy -good to share).More
