Lovely restaurant, great staff

We had a lovely lovely time at Osteria, MataMata. Very impressive venue and menu. Very welcoming staff. Particular thanks though to our lovely waitress, I unfortunately didn’t catch her name, but she is maybe in her early twenties, dark hair with glasses. I asked her for information on the menu in regard to gluten free options, she was very helpful, brought me a new menu completely and informed me of the kitchen safety. This waitress was very attentive to our table throughout the whole night, she is an asset to your team. ☺️

Went out for a lovely relaxing lunch with my partner and we were not disappointed.

Treated to an wonderful time at the Osteria. The staff were more than helpful and very welcoming with great service, but one that was not overwhelming, as can sometimes be the case, with deliciously tasting food arriving promptly from the Chef. The lovely ambience was enhanced by being able to sit in the outside air which was blessed with shaded sunshine. Osteria is well worth the effort of traveling to, as we have done several times.

We walked in on Labour Monday and were greeted by the friendly staff who promptly found us a table. The staff and the female Duty Manager were very friendly. We ordered the Open steak and Chicken sandwiches along with the chicken Fettuccine and a pizza. Everything was delicious and we highly recommend this place.

Very disappointed with the quality of the Bolognese two of us ordered it and both say the same, didn’t drain the pasta and both plates full of water Bolognese was completely tasteless absolutely no flavour at all don’t order it it’s totally awful I ordered a glass of coke and sent it back it was like water no flavour at all think they need to check their quality before opening As soon as I returned the coke we was ignored by all staff throughout our time, we advised when paying and asked if she would advise chef said she would not apologies but fast to take our money with no offer to reduce the price so $80 for utter crap

The NZ restaurant that ran out of Sauvignon Blanc

The food was good and reasonably generous portions but at Auckland prices. The servers were pleasant and well-meaning but were let down by poor management and training. After ordering our wine selection (off quite a short list) it took a while for them to come back and advise there wasn't any of it (an Italian Soave) left. We ordered a Sav Blanc and a bottle and glasses eventually appeared but after it was poured I noticed it was a Pinot Gris. After more delays the server said they had no Sav Blanc in the restaurant, it had been finished at lunchtime! Why the servers weren't told this up front so they could tell us I don't know, and quite why any NZ restaurant is so badly run that it runs out of Sav Balnc (we're not talking a rare fine wine here) I don't know. Eventually about half way into our mains we managed a bottle of red - even this was wrongly listed on the wine list where it was shown as a Merlot but was in fact a Cabernet Merlot. By this stage I'd lost the will to live and just went with it. Very poorly managed in my opinion and spoiled what could have been a very good evening out.

Over priced and super skint on toppings

Vegetarian pizza with a request for prosciutto on top. i was told the prosciutto would be an extra $10 on an already pricey vegetarian pizza. After some wangling, we agreed on $5 for a small addition of prosciutto. Total cost $38.11. Menu said fresh and roasted vegetables….i think each slice had one mushroom and one slice of pepper on each. Very very average and not worth the price at all. Will be skipping down the road next time to Pizza Hut or Dominoes.

A Huge Let Down….

I was so disappointed with our visit. I read the reviews and thought it was a safe bet. Sadly not. Food was ok, but nothing to write home about. It wasn’t very hot and lacked flavour. Certainly not worthy of the reviews they have received. The service was poor. Wait staff were inattentive, didn’t smile once, barely communicated and when we paid we weren’t even given the curtesy of a “thank you”. Frankly rude! A huge let down.

Overpriced Linguine Pescatore

My wife and I had light dinner mid week just before Christmas. The front of house greeting wasn't particularly welcoming, but we were directed to a table, the waitress was pleasant and efficient bringing water and taking our order. My wife had the venison carpaccio which she enjoyed, at $25 a little on the high side but a nice dish. I had the linguine pescatore that at $35 promised prawns, mussels, clams and calamari. There were no prawns but plenty of small shrimp, 1 mussel and no clams. There was plenty of minced seafood of various types (looked suspiciously like the seafood salad mix you can buy from the supermarket) It was pleasant enough to eat but should have been a $25.

Very Pricey!!

My friend and I had dinner here last week. The food was ok. The price was not. We were offered sparkling water which we accepted only to be presented with a $12 bottle. We had a tiny carafe of wine which was $45!, my friend asked for the special but apparently got the fish from the menu which was a whopping $41. My spaghetti was good ($29) but I could have used a side dish of Parmesan cheese. My friend lives in Matamata so when he popped in to give feedback they were very unresponsive. We won’t eat there again.

Disappointed

Really disappointed this time around. Food was average and when we went to pay found that we were charged for a much more expensive bottle of wine than we ordered. Took another 5 minutes to sort out which annoyed the other 3 people behind us waiting to pay. Horrible way to finish our experience

Osteria has always been a big favourite Restaurant of mine, but tonight my partner were highly disappointed. I asked for a coke with no ice as ice waters the flavour down. I got a warm coke in a warm glass! Helo, keep your drinks in the fridge! My partner's beer took nearly 20 mins to arrive, until I asked where it was. Meals were rather bland, sauce around the lasagna was more like a tomato soup. We didn't stay for dessert as had a feeling I was also going to be disappointed in the Tiramisu. We won't be going back, so sad really, I used to rave about this place.

This restaurant used to be the first pick of anything in the region, however it has gone down hill over the last couple of years since Covid. After the last visit when our mains arrived before our drinks we thought we'd give it one last shot and booked a table for a group of 10. The 20 minute wait for drinks and lack or service to order a second one wasn't a great start. However having been frequently in the past we held hope for the food and while it tasted good, the meals were half the size of what they used to be; the Risotto had about 5 spoonful's and the Pizza's had shrunk from last time. All in all this made for a thoroughly disappointing evening as we left feeling like neither our stomachs or wallets were as full as they should have been.

'In training' is the best server!!!

Our server 'In Training' aka "Lorenz" was absolutely amazing. Great recommendations and personality. We came in town and came here for dinner and it was the best. The shrimp pizza was phenomenal, as was the chicken parm finished with the tiramisu and several glasses of Pinot noir. Highly recommend!

Decent service, poor food

Efficient service but poor food. We last ate here abut four years ago and our meals were terrible, this time it was a little better but not good enough to justify the prices. Our steaks were large but poor quality meat (in an area where good beef is readily available) and overcooked. The peppercorn sauce was awful - vinegary and harsh.

Lovely lunch with tables set out nicely. I didn't feel like the people next to me were in my space which was nice. Ordered a drink, but for $16 the cocktail was terribly small which was a let down for the price. Starter was Polenta chips which were very crisp and too over cooked for my liking. I think these may be bought in frozen as this is the taste to them, no seasoning at all. I ordered Mushroom Risotto and added chicken for an extra $5 the chicken had no seasoning at all. The risotto would have been perfect without it as it had great flavour and the tasteless chicken was the let down. I was not asked how the meal was during eating the meal, but asked on leaving when paying. A little too late to be asking then. My empty glass was taken and I was not offered another drink till much after that and so I stuck with water, which was bought to the table on arrival. I didn't enjoy the flies in my table space while trying to eat, landing on my plate and constantly waving them off. There seemed to be nothing to keep flies away. I didn't enjoy this Osteria as much as I enjoyed my visit to Taupo's Osteria.
