About
How we started Kumar's has a great atmosphere for the whole family. The food is like nothing you have ever tasted before it will open up your taste buds to flavours yum!! THE KUMAR FAMILY I came to New Zealand from Southern India in 1998, liked what I saw and brought my family in search of a better life. We hoped and expected that our children would be the main beneficiaries of our work. The business has done much better than we anticipated and that is mainly because of the support we have had from the people of Paeroa. I am now a New Zealand citizen and our younger daughter was born here making her a “Kiwi Kid”. We really do appreciate your custom and we proud to be part of Paeroa. Thank You, we will continue to do our best to earn your continuing support. Please eat and enjoy! Santhosh Kumar Your smile is our strength

Arrived for a birthday celebration dinner with freinds and was suprised to find a booked table with birthday bunting and balloons over the table. Was greeted by the owner and staff with happy birthday and shown to table. We selected our meals and was served drinks while we waited, first coarse arrived soon after and it was really scrumptious. The whole meal was served and as we all had individual tastes they did not dissapoint. Near the end of the meal the owner put on a u-tube Happy Birthday montage on the TV. It made a fitting end to a perfect meal. Thank you KUMARS it made the day special as well as the food. Not too hot or too mild, as I said perfect.

Totally recommended. Lovely staff and freshly cooked delicious food - best curries ever! Can order curries in mild, medium, hot or Indian hot so caters for all. Can’t wait to go back.

On arrival, we were shown to our table and presented with menus, then left so we could talk and discuss what we were going to have. Santash came over and took our drinks order. He came back with the drinks and then we ordered and not a note book or pencil anywhere (all in his head). It wasn't long before the starters arrived and we tucked in with gusto, the flavours ooozed from just simple dishes. Not a long wait for the main and again Santash did not dissapoint, we each took a spoonful from each others dish, curry heaven. You get a good serving size but, if you can't eat it all he does take away as well. All the meats were so tender and well cooked. You really will not do better than Kumars in Paeroa. Santash also remembers what you had last time.

The brightly painted restaurant is located on the main thoroughfare through Paeroa, parking was easy on the main street. The orange building was festooned with hundreds of Xmas lights, creating a party atmosphere. We booked for our large group to eat here on a Saturday evening. The staff and restaurant size were well equipped to cope with big groups and a full house. Our order included goat curry, fish molly, chicken madras, lamb masala, vegetable kuruma and duck curry. Rice came with the main dish, and we requested mild heat. We also ordered naan bread for the table. Serve size was typical of most Indian restaurants, with lots of curry sauce. Wait staff were very pleasant and obliging, comfortable family run ambiance. We did not have a long wait for the meals to arrive. The best curry of the night turned out to be the fish molly, the least favoured was the duck, followed closely by the goat 'bone' curry. Hint: choose "medium" on the heat scale, and see whether this ups the flavour intensity. Still, it was a good experience overall .

Thank you for at least giving us a pass mark. We try our best to satisfy all our customers and make each of our curries to the best of our abilities. We do not add any kind of chilies or chili powder when you ask for mild which could have made the curries not stand out as much but that said we do have a lot of people who love the goat and duck curries.

I rarely contribute to reviews but couldn’t let this opportunity go by. If you are in Paeroa just go - book a table and be prepared for the most flavourful, aromatic Indian food you have ever eaten. I did not want this meal to end, delicious. Everything else you read about the friendly service, it’s all true. Just go and enjoy.

We were in town for a night while biking the Hauraki Trail. We had a beer at the local pub and some friendly locals we chatted to recommended Kumars! So glad we took their advice. Made from scratch and gloriously tasty. Friendly, family owned and authentic. Well priced. Who knew Paeroa had such talent! :)

Took the wife for valentines day and again was not dissapointed with the food. Very well cooked and the flavours are exceptional. You can have it either hot, medium, mild or indian hot, but again it's up to you how you want it. The wife likes very mild mango chicken. It was very busy that night so it took a little longer to get the meal but well worth the wait. We will be going back again

Walking in we were greeted by all the staff like long lost friends. We were seated and given the menu's. We ordered and spent a short time waiting for the first coarse to arrive and we were eager to get started. The main arrived and again the flavours were exceptional plus, it was very hot and had to take time to cool it down, but the wait was worth it. Very plentiful so had to take a doggy bag for the rest. If you get the chance to visit Kumars, you will not be disappointed.

I’m not sure how the reviews are so positive. Naan is served in a plastic bag which makes it taste like plastic. Dal is so bland that we wondered if it was potato based. The samosas are reasonably good, but that just started a conversation about whether they were bright in from a supplier. Honestly the people are lovely, yes there’s a wait but it’s not unreasonable. And lots of people seem to have a lovely experience. I feel like the people that enjoy Kumar’s would also enjoy cafe 131 or the local RSA. That’s not to put them down, just that it seems like the flavouring at Kumar’s has been dialled in to a fairly bland kiwi or traditional meat n three veg taste. If you like mild butter chicken, this might be your place. If you’re looking for a curry, I’d suggest you look elsewhere. And naan in a plastic bag is just odd ?!?

Went here for takeaway dinner. We knew it would e great because of the number of people sitting in the restaurant and the number waiting for takeaway orders. The cooking is done in front of house so you can see the authentic ingredients being added. They warn you that wait times will occur because each meal is individually prepared

This is a great place to dine in, lunch or dinner. The owner Kumar himself greeted us4 and briefed us after we asked him "what's special" we opted for their famous Kerala fish molly and fish Malabari which was so sumptuous and authentic south Indian curry. We also had the Masala Dosa which again didn't fail in its taste. The quantity and quality wasn't compromised. I would 200% recommend this place as they cater to everyone's taste - mild, medium or spicy (Indian Style) The décor inside is very much Indianized with family pictures in the traditional dress. Best Wishes Godfrey J and friends

We have been to other Indian restaurants in the Waikato and always compare them to Kumars. The others invariably come off second best - or worse. Along with our favourite main(s), we always order two buttered naan breads and ask for the second one to be delivered half way through the meal. When it arrives we always say to each other - we really don't need this - but we still scoff it down. I don't know how they make their naan so much better than other chefs, but it is second to none. So buttery and flaky. I think the best compliment I can offer is that they don't need to wash our butter chicken bowl when we leave, since I have wiped it sparkling clean with those last few pieces of naan. Can't wait for another excuse to visit Paeroa!

I have been coming to Kumars for more than 10 years and recommend them to all my family and friends, Its definitely a place worth trying. I have travelled to other countries such as UK, Australia, Singapore and many more but have not come across any flavour such as this. Paeroa you are luchlky to have a gem like this not only the food but a family owned business which you don't see frequently. Spoke with the owner and he said they have been their for 23 years.

We arrived at the restaurant and were led to a rear table with a Happy Birthday banner over it. On the way, the owner Santhosh came out of the kitchen and greeted us all, and wished me a happy birthday. We ordered and during the meal the TV came on and played a video "Happy Birthday Dave". Took me by surprise I can tell you. We were NOT disappointed with the meal, as usual, it was of a high standard and the flavors, wow. It was an evening I will remember for a long time, thank you the Kumar family

I never regret going for the lunch special, just big enough to take away those hunger pangs, but never too big to leave you bloated and unable to move. The service was great and attentive. It's so nice to sit down and enjoy a delicious hot meal instead of cold rolls and Pannini's etc.
