Our favorite restaurants all had holidays, so we tried it here. The place is idyllic, unfortunately you have none of it because there is no outdoor terrace and the tables in the front dining room are facing the counter. Overall, everything is quite rustic, including the dishes. We liked the red mojo, the salad looks very colorful, but is extremely fruity and instead of banana you wished for a few more green leaves than the few iceberg shreds. The rabbit tastes a bit strict, which is interpreted as in-house pickling. The staff and owner are very friendly, especially if you speak Spanish. The Pimientos de Padron, which we ate before the photos, were really delicious: All in all okay, but does not necessarily have to be repeated.

We have been visiting Valle Gran Rey for many years but this was our first experience of El Palmar. A great place to eat for vegetarians. Staff were very considerate and atmosphere conducive to a relaxing supper. Will definitely eat there on future occasions.

Although booking was recommended we arrived early 18.45. Plenty of tables reserved but also plenty available. Service was excellent as was the food We both had garlic prawns and spicy goat. Not spicy as in heat but cardamom. Very tasty. Carrots and cauliflower were hard but the potatoes and beans good. Before starters arrived had lovely fresh bread and Canarian sauces. Had house red wine, cheaper to order from the wine list, but was very good.

Traditional spanish cuisine. Family run with lots of local clients. Excellent wine card. Again excellent wines. Really cheap. We went for lunch, clearly not the most busy part of the day. Good to see how local suppliers were bringing in the fresh ingredients.

Very nice personel - good food and good music Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Table reservation is recomended. Locals jump in and sing. We went there twice during our stay and will for sure come back next visit to the isla magica. Do recommend this restaurant. /anders

Ate here with my nine-year-old daughter last night. Some local musicians playing and a genial host made it a pleasant experience, but the waitress was borderline rude. Seafood soup was enjoyed by my daughter and although she couldn't finish her chicken breast it was tender and tasty. My swordfish with mussels and prawns was so-so, over-salted, as were the accompanying potatoes. Would return, because a warm welcome goes a long way, and the host is a nice guy.

Friendly priced restaurant slightly off the main road. The salad was very good, the deep fried goat cheese rather tasteless. The portions are huge, the quality average. We had sole, which was somewhat dry because baked too long, and cazuela with monk fish which seemed first baked and did not have much taste either. The wine, a 1996 Faustino I, was something rarely encountered in restaurants and thus quite special. Although still OK unfortunately already slightly over its top.

Really disappointed. The waitress hardly acknowledged us, no chat, no welcome, merely basic service . The food was ok , cuttlefish a bit tough but eatable , curtains drawn back so we could see the sun set, but no ambiance from the owners, nor any effort to make our dinner memorable . Ignore lonely planet's recommendation

La Gomera knows it's pedigree and Valle Gran Rey has El Palmar - the restaurant that's best in show! On two visits we were blown away each time. The catch of the day being top dish - the schnitzel a close 2nd (perfected for the Geman pallet) and oh so local! Well done Javier. Hopefully see you again in the near future.

The night we visited El Palmar the waiter seemed to be rushed off his feet, doing a near heroic job, and that did mean a little wait, and some compromise, on the service. Still, this is a characterful, charming, restaurant, set amongst the banana palms of Valle Gran Rey, and the food is outstanding. I'd recommend (wholeheartedly) the goats cheese in palm honey starter, and the intensely tasty Canarian goat stew main, accompanied by the ubiquitous (incredibly tasty, and almost addictive) Canarian salted, 'wrinkly' new potatoes (papas arrugadas). Do check your bill though, as there was a mistake on ours also. If you're in Valle Gran Rey, don't miss El Palmar.

Situated about Vueltas in Borbalan the El Palmar is the "local" for many German walkers that rent the plentiful, cheapish ,accommodation nearby - so it gets busy early and reservations are a good idea. The place itself is a bar and restaurant and has a heavy wooden interior and a hunting lodge type of feel. The food is local and similarly rustic, not outstanding or remarkable in any way just typical and of above average quality, whilst reasonably priced. The waiter/owner is very efficient and pleasant but the waitress can tend to surliness.

A bit off the main track but a nice walk. Food was excellent - especially the fried goats cheese. Local food and local musicians. Waitress looked like she would rather be somewhere else but we will definitely go again..

Excellent food and good value. The best meal we had in our week here. As the other review says a little out of the way but still busy and a good atmosphere. The only place we saw local la gomerans in.

We were recommended this restaurant by a fellow-tourist, and might otherwise have missed it because it's tucked away back from the beachfront at La Calera, among banana trees. It's directly inland from the Hotel Gran Rey. It's hugely popular with German tourists and we only just managed to get table (at 7.20 pm). Service was slow, possibly because we'd arrived shortly after most of the others. The food, when it came, was very good, and the menu more extensive than most others in the area. For a starter, we shared a huge salad with a surprising but tasty concoction of ingredients topped with melted cheese. My main course (rabbit) was served with some veg (which is rare!), as well as the usual Canary potatoes. My husband had goat. "Remind me next time - I don't like goat. It tastes of goat" was his comment, but there was nothing wrong with the cooking. We didn't have room for a sweet. Our only gripe was that on our printed, itemised bill, the wine we'd ordered came out at 2 euros more than on the menu. We didn't have a menu handy to check on this, but confirmed by checking the display menu on our way out, byt which time we no longer had our bill, and it would have taken ages to try to complain. But they didn't get a tip from us. So I'd recommend it for the good food, which is scarcely more expensive than some much inferior restaurants - but get there early, and check your bill!
