Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After nearly not going because of the bad reviews, we were pleased we did. Service was great and the chef kindly offered a few child friendly options, so everyone was happy. The lamb shank and grilled fish were faultless. Topped off with great views.

We have stayed here a few times this past year & the food has always been great. Last night we were extremely disappointed. Firstly the staff could not make a mojito. There is no cocktail list but we have had them previously. Water was fine,...but no one makes money on water…. He ordered fish if the day -orange roughy. It was in a beer batter with fries. Don’t get me wrong but a small piece of something to decorate the plate could of been the highlight. Bare chips & fish it was. The fish was greasy & there were 3 small pieces for $35 which is really expensive. The chips were inedible. They looked & tasted like yesterday’s reheated leftovers. All in all a bad experience after a long day! She had the entree pork belly as a main. It was cooked nicely & served with apple sauce & some strands of fresh apple for a neat appearance. We got green beans as an accompaniment & they were devoured by both of us. The fries as an extra were also not good & left. When we were asked by the waitress if everything was okay & he said no she was a bit gobsmacked, but she did give us the fish meal for free. It doesn’t entice us back again.More

Stunning location with unfortunately terrible restaurant food. It is such a shame. We ate in the restaurant twice over a 2 night stay. Once for breakfast with very few options and once for dinner. The dinner was almost inedible. Ghastly food with high prices. Packet...gnocchi with the most intensely rich onion gravy. Warm bruschetta with a mountain of warm half cooked onion and oil soaked bread. I am not a fussy person but this was dire!More

The service was outstanding however my meal of fish and chips was overpriced. All it could of taken was them adding some salad to compliment the fried meal.

The service was excellent and attentive - Sonal was a professional who really enjoyed his job. There were so many mixed reviews about the restaurant, but we decided that we would try it since we were staying at the Resort. And it didn't disappoint. We...had lovely entrees, mains - whitebait pattie, pork belly, fish & salmon and wine. The dishes were all nicely cooked and presented, and we enjoyed them. The restaurant wasn't full but was steady. Reservations is essential during holiday seasons. Highly recommended !More

We stayed at the Punakaiki Resort for 1 night on the way up the coast. Was hesitant about eating here due to the mixed reviews and obscene prices. But due to ease of walking 1 min around the corner as opposed to researching and driving...somewhere else, we dined here. Immaculate service from our 2 waitresses Brenda and Shirley (I think), simply 10/10. Our drinks came within 5 mins and our food arrived after about 15-20minutes. I had the eye fillet steak with mash, Portobello mushrooms under the mash(not on menu but delish), some little roasted onions and kumara chips stuck in the mash, toasyed almonds and some kind of jus. Looked devine, tasted devine and was just the right amount. My steak was cooked perfectly and the jus made me want to kick the plate clean! Simply 10/10 perfection! The only downside was no greens, would have been lovely with some green beans or broccolini on the side. Hubby had creamy chicken and bacon pasta and it was a generous serve and tasted good. Nice amount of chicken and bacon too. The price was obscene and seemed like they were taking advantage of the captive market here at Punakaiki. $44.50 for steak and $35 for pasta, $12 wine. Haven't ever paid that much for a meal not even in central Auckland or central Wellington. Despite the EYEWATERING price it was truly delicious and a great experience with our 5 star service from our lovely waitresses. A nice change to our usual choice of pub grub.More

Jacob's Grill, located within Punakaiki Resort, has good food with great views! Dinner was included as part of our travel booking/package. The filet was outstanding and the lamb ragu was above average. The desserts were on point as well! The service was a bit iffy...though and can be improved. We typically try not to dine onsite at hotels, but can recommend doing so here!More

If you are not a guest at the resort, don’t bother going. First, in the summer, dinner service does not start until 6 pm. We arrived (on a Tuesday) at 5:30, thinking they would be open. The hostess in the restaurant looked both my husband...and myself up and down and said if we wanted to book a table, we would have to go to the hotel’s reception desk. I went to the resort’s lobby, waited for a guest to fully check in to their room, ask a plethora of questions, then I was able to ask for a reservation, only to have the desk clerk walk us back into the restaurant, to look at the reservation book, that the hostess had on her table the entire time. This process took an extremely unnecessary amount of time, and was so off putting and unwelcoming, we did not want to give them our business. This establishment is not in the hospitality business!More

Waiter refused to get our orders if not given in sequence of sitting. After ordering bottle of wine and tasting, you will get your bottle whenever you like it or not. If you like to compare wines you need to go to wine exposition, waiter...can't bring it to you. If you don't behave in a way waiter likes, he gives you a reprimand.More

Despite a small menu, the food we ordered was excellent, from entree to desert. Rhonda, who served us, was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the wines. She lifted the whole experience for us. With all that came a gorgeous view.

My husband and I had a wonderful meal here on our one night stay in Punakaiki. After being on the move all day, we checked into the hotel and made our reservation for dinner at Jacob's. We just didn't want to get back in the...car and go looking for somewhere for dinner. It might be advisable to call ahead for reservations during the busy season. It has a very nice upscale atmosphere with a gorgeous view and soft lighting. We were starving so ordered a flatbread with sweet chili sauce as an appetizer with a glass of wine. It was so good! Our entrees were a pasta with chicken and a beef brisket gnocchi. Very enjoyable meal after a tiring day.More

We had dinner here recently. Views are absolutely stunning, 180n degrees of coastal magic. Dinner was a mixed bag. My wife had the pan fried turbot which was very tasty and generous. I had chicken breasts, wrapped in bacon. The chicken was overcooked and dry...but still had skin on it which was limp and unpleasant. Baby carrot side generous and tasty. Wait staff friendly and attentive.More

Dinner was ok. I had the Lamb Ragu & my husband had the fish & chips. My meal was executed ok. It was mostly pasta though. I was definitely left feeling it could have done with more vegetables for the price. My husbands fish wasn't...great. The batter was very good, the fish inside was a bit mushy & lacking flavour. We had the mud cake for desert & it was good. Cost was $150. It was worth closer to $100. Service was good.More
