Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

It was a treat to dine at this pub on a stop with our tour group. We took a lunch break in Waihi and got to do a "scatter lunch". The folks on the tour "scatter" to a place that they can get food. By "scattering" you don't all end up at the same place and overwhelm one establishment. Lucky for me and my husband; we ended up at The Sterling! This restaurant was very roomy inside with interesting decor. It very well could've handled our small tour group, should we have all ended up here. Something to note is not all pubs accept credit cards. You should have some New Zealand cash on hand when looking for a place to eat in this town. We did not have cash and this was one of the places that took credit cards! We ordered a beer and a burger. Both were very good. The sandwich was large, done perfect, and on a fresh bun with delicious condiments. There was a side of fries, which appeared to be hand cut. They came out hot and were so good! They had a pretty good selection of beers, as well as . We opted for our usual Mexican favorite. The best part was probably the gentleman behind the bar! He was so nice and friendly! We had a terrific chat with him! Then it was back on the tour bus with a full tummy and a sleepy ride to our next destination! Please give this place a try if ever in the area! It was such a comforting place to stop!

We like trying out traditional heritage pub type places and the Sterling was very good. It's very big inside and you order at the bar like most pubs. Staff were friendly and helpful. I had the seafood basket which was really delicious. The prawn twisters and calamari were excellent. Daughter had fish and chips but chips were a bit underdone. All up it was great value for about $50 for 2 large meals and 2 alcoholic drinks. We could not fit a dessert in.

Three of us went for lunch on Tuesday 15 August 2023. Service was friendly enough, and you order at the bar. The food was bought to the table promptly and was very nice. Two had rump steak with mushroom sauce ($28 each) which was nice and I had a BLT on a panini with fries ($22). The panini was very fresh, with a very nice amount of bacon, with plenty of fries which were cooked nicely. Very filling. Would definitely recommend and visit again.

Enter this place and was greeted by a lovely gentlemen telling us what time the kitchen was closing at 8pm and still had time to order. We arrived at 7:30pm. Keep in mind we came down for a funeral in Paeroa and staying in Waihi. The asian kitchen staff worker taking our order was extremely rude to me. Telling me to view their menu and choose from the menu. I tell her my order and she is rudely telling me it’s not on the menu and she’s ignoring me staring off at other patrons behind us. I stop her in her tracks and tell her she’s being extremely rude and this is on her menu and repeated myself twice. She writes my order rudely than proceeds to walk away. The group I come with decide we are taking our money elsewhere. For me if service is bad than this puts me off my food making me not hungry. Will never visit this place again.

Hearty meals in a character bistro pub in Waihi. We’d biked from Paeroa to Waihi with kids (8 and 10) so after a rest at the Goldmine Motel (excellent) we chose to have dinner at the Stirling. Good selection of well-priced beer and wine, and good hearty meals. The pan fried fish and mussels were very good. Well priced kids menu including a huge sundae!

The Sterling is a traditional pub doing its updated NZ thing, gone are the hay days of kiwi public bars and, in Waihi there are quite a few of these remnants of a past era. The Sterling is clean and friendly, Carlsberg on tap and a bistro experience. There is memorabilia on the walls and it holds a quirky interesting vibe. The host is friendly and happy to share some history. We did arrive close to kitchen closing time but they cheerfully took our orders and checked our vax passes. The food wasn't exceptional but a steak and a beer in a rather comfortable space was a welcome experience.

Visited for dinner with my wife on a Sunday evening and found the food, ambience and beer all great. The staff was helpful, polite and friendly. Very good selection of food, beers and wines, all at reasonable prices. The Sterling is located in the town centre with plenty of free car parking nearby. We had a great evening amongst some very friendly pub patrons.

Very good selection, Excellent food. The steaks were large and cooked to perfection, the pan fried fish was delicious, the beef curry was praised and the steak sandwich was huge and tasty. The mud-cake and mini Pav were shared and declared yummy, especially the ice cream. Looking forward to going back again. Recommended for top pub meals.

Good old nz pub. Quite pricy, meals were decent. Ordered x5 cokes. Bar staff said ill give you a bottle instead. 1.5lt ($4 at supermarket) which he poured into a large jug with ice that cost $12! Yikes. Ok one off visit while passing through town.

Classic old school NZ pub. Not a lot has changed here over the years, except probably the food service which was fantastic. Greeted with a smile, dinner menu was extensive, we got the nachos and CLT with cheese and they were both sizeable and very nice. Price was pretty standard so reasonable for today.

We thought we'd give the Stirling a go for lunch while we were in town. Needn't have bothered. We were directed to sign in so we did. We waited then were told to take a seat, so we did. Then we waited for 15 minutes while others were seated and their orders taken. Tried to get the attention of the old boy wandering around. The last straw was watching a table get cleared to fit a group on. Walked out. The man behind us just gave us a bamboozled look as we walked out.

Had an evening meal here, good food at reasonable prices. They even accommodated a special request with no hassle. Remember this is pub and it is a historic building, so don't expect flash surroundings. We found the atmosphere warm and friendly, with good old fashioned Kiwi hospitality.
