Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Charming café, definitely worth stopping for a cup of coffee and some pastries, however food was overpriced, hamburger was decent, good quality meat in it but 22$ for a decent burger without fries is quite expensive. Extra star for the atmosphere.

This place is a regular for us and I would have given 5 stars, but our experience there on Friday was a let down. The inexperienced young waitress/server who brought us our hot drinks and food was very cold and unfriendly and when I asked...her for a serviette, she asked me 'WHY'. 😳 I needed the serviette to mop up in the coffee she had spilt in my saucer when she brought it to our table. The spill she made wasn't a biggie for me, but the 'why' was. Not sure customer service is for her. Her hospitalify was lacking. She should have thought to clean the saucer without me asking. She was very young though and probably lacked experience, but a friendly smile goes a long way with customers.More

Quaint setting but very little without meat on the menu, pretty expensive and nothing for kids other than toasted sandwiches (which they didn’t want) and then we had to wait 45 minutes with 4 hungry little kids for them to bring us said sandwiches -...with hardly anyone else in the cafe. When it finally arrived it was terribly average. Fail :(More

Go back in time and visit this one disused railway station that was relocated from the nearby town. Besides being able to board an old Goldfields train to nearby Waihi, try the homemade cooked food or cakes which are on offer in this gem before...the train or wandering away along the the path which goes under the road which leads to the nearby river and goldfields old working areas. Worth a visitMore

Some people ride bikes to get there, some drive, and some use the slow train between there and Waihi. The food is OK for the price. The service was painfully slow when we were there.

We are regulars here…. and most times the service is ok. This time we received very poor service. The woman at the counter with a mask exemption, rolling her eyes at my children as they asked for a milkshake, aggressively said, ‘Just get a drink...from the fridge’. They have never served milkshakes in past visits either. Handy hint… maybe take it off the menu. I ordered the soup at $17. What an absolute joke. Enough for maybe 4 tablespoons of soup. So disappointing.More

We stopped here for a coffee. I really enjoyed my coffee and a piece of date loaf. The ginger slice my husband had was really nice too. Pricing compared to other cafes was good. The cafe is lovely, still in the old style of the...station. we sat outside and just in time to witness the arrival of the old train. Overall a very enjoyable coffee stopMore

We visited on the train ride from Waihi. The service was far to slow for a full train during school holidays with only 1 hr to order and eat. We were last in line so meant we didn't get our order in until after 30mins....And then food wasnot ready until train was ready to leave. Which meant we had to take it onto the train. And we were supposed to be wearing masks as enforced when we bought our tickets. We only ordered pies and savouries which needed to be heated. But still took over 20 mins. It seemed they were doing one table order at a time and couldn't multi task. I would suggest a food warmer for busy times. Also my daughter order the last mince pie but then they said they had rub and and gave me an option of an Angus beef or potato top. So I had to go check wtih her and by the time I came back to counter they had sold both. After I was offered them. That's not how you do business, I was served before that person. So she ended up with to meezly sausage rolls. I wouldn't go back even if not on train ride as whole experience was terrible.More

Good place to stop off if your either cycling though the Coromandel or if you’ve been on the Waikino train line from Waihi. Just a bit of advise it can get extremely busy when the train is in so you may have to wait a...bit.More

Stopped for a late lunch snack while biking both ways on the the Gorge trail. Took us a little bit to sort out how to get there but excellent food and drink. Only down side are the crap bike stands outside. None of our 4...bikes fitted properly and no racks for wider tires on our mtbs. The racks were also in very poor condition and need replacing.More

My wife and I stopped at the Waikino Station Café for lunch having ridden part of the Hauraki Rail Trail between Waihi - Paeroa and we were very glad we did. The food and coffee were great - there was a very good range of...both cabinet and menu food. Staff were polite and helpful. The café has many mementoes from a bygone era depicting the history of the area. Well worth a stop.More

Visited while biking on the trail. Seemed rushed. No poached eggs and hashbrowns were raw. Bacon good. Had 3 attempts to get pepper with salt but kept returning with salt. Very average coffee which could not be timed for after our meals

We did the train ride from Waihi to Waihino and back, it was lunch time and had to wait for an hour so of course having lunch there was the only option. Couple of choices in the cabinet like panini, pies and sweets. We got...2 panini which the bread was very soft I think they might have put it in the microwave to heat it up and melt the cheese then quickly toasted. The filling was a bit weird, ham and cheese with crushed pineapple, some sweet chutney was not really nice. The chicken was a bit better but blend. The kids had a mince pie and the feta and spinach rolls which was average. A bit overpriced for what it was but there is no other option around .....More

On our list of many wonderful things to do in NZ was to walk along the Hauraki Rail Trail from Karangahake Hall to the Waikino Railway station and Cafe, then back again. A total of 15km. A couple of weeks ago we finally go to...do it, and as I love eating out, I was very much looking forward to lunch at the cafe. My husband and I both ordered the Scotch burger (scotch fillet) and thought we would order a drink and cake after that. I had spotted my favorite peanut brownies that looked delicious! At $5 each they were pretty pricey "but they are big" I justified. Anyway, out came the burgers. $19.50 each - no chips, just the burger. The most unloved, uninspired, tasteless, boring burger I have ever had. The meat was sinewy and unseasoned, and the vegetables consisted of lettuce and tomato. We should have complained, I don't know why we didn't. Needless to say we left without parting with any more of our money. Pity about that peanut brownie! Instead we had a most enjoyable double scoop waffle cone ice-cream from the diary in Paeroa - now that was value for money!More
