Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was one of the coolest cafés I've ever visited. They have an aviator themed interior with flight simulator that you can try for free as long as you dined in.

No toilets available. Gluten-free only available to coeliacs., they should have a notice saying you can't buy it.No smiles in Talisman. Food good. Expensive. Have to eat outside and no rubbish bin for paper plates. Beautiful surroundings but attitude of ladies at counter was surly...and rude. Very disappointed after looking forward to going there. Certainly not how it used to be.More

It's an interesting space in a nice location. There are nice things to look at on the wall (and a small eel in a fish tank which the kids liked) but the drinks and food are pricey and the coffee was burned. A single shot...- dine in - flat white for $5 is at the top end for price, but the quality was at the bottom end. Would avoid next time and push through to the next town. Could benefit from a small price drop and definitely properly train the barrister!More

Total waste of money. I got my finger caught between the chair and the seat which was loose, screw lying on the floor. Badly bruised painful fingernail. Staff couldn't care less, no apology, rude and unfriendly. Food was terrible. Processed chicken bits with chips and...a bit of salad: $22.00!! It was almost thrown in front of us on the table. Rude older person and even worse teenager. Will never be back. Going to the railway station next time, they are great!More

Such a shame that the cafe isnt as welcoming as the lovely gardens. We were served by a young girl who looked like she was just learning the ropes, but was polite and friendly. When the owner (I presume) took over to repeat order back...to us she said the wrong type of coffee. We said that we had ordered Vienna not cappuccino as she had said. She snapped back saying she hadn't said cappuccino and then scribbled out the coffee and asked what it was we wanted. The food quality was very poor and coffee burnt. Such a waste to leave over half your food and coffee on plates, but it really wasn't great. I can see why this cafe is rated 28 out of 30 in the waihi areaMore

YUM The place was quirky but spotless the toilets were spotless I’m shocked at previous comments The owner was just lovely even gave us a piece of caramel slice to take home We will definitely recommend this quirky cafeMore

The signs everywhere - even blocking the stairwell should have been enough warning, the Surly teenager behind the counter was the second warning, the cost!!!!! OMG, two coffees, two BLTs - $42! Really? Definitely the third warning. When we questioned the cost, Surly was not...impressed but did explain that it was a Public Holiday and that there was a 15% surcharge, hmmm hang on, that's Northland/Auckland Anniversary weekend, pretty sure we were in the Bay of Plenty. Surrly shugged, she didnt decide that, it had nothing to do with her. The food didnt take too long to arrive, WORST coffee ever, Processed Ham Roll, Plastic cheese, BLT made with fried bread! Serious??! We walked out leaving most of that mess on the table. This was the most disgusting meal I have ever bought at a cafe. If that is the best you can do, its time to get a new job!More

Don’t bother! Considering this is THE cafe in the gorge and potentially could attract hundreds of visitors, it did little to keep anybody there. Cabinet choices were dire, despite there being a couple of gluten free options, the old faithfuls were missing. No brownies, no...scones, and the cupcakes looked a day or two old! Service was surly and the tables looked dirty and the whole place needs a breath of fresh air and a good clean. My advice - save yourselves and head back to Waihini for lunch at the station cafe. The Talisman isn’t worth risking the road crossing to get to.More

We decided to give this place a go. It is in such a busy part of the country and we were worried it would be really busy as it is opposite a very busy rail trail that was solid packed. We should have backed away...when we arrived at lunch time to find hardly anyone there. We decided to stay anyway as we were starving. The cabinet looked terrible. The food was not flash. Looked like what you make at home. Not cafe flash at all. Signs everywhere - no payWave which is crap due to COVID. We ordered chicken tenders. Yuck - two small tenders and an old soggy salad. Hubby order BLT. It was made with regular sliced bread. He also felt his salad was really bad. The place has been done up nicely outside. The inside is dark and dated Would never return - which is a shame as we only live down the roadMore

Is the Talisman Cafe and Info Hub. A family run business who built the place from scratch 40 years ago. Here you will find a treasure trove of local information for any history buff wanting to know more about local history. Lining the walls are...old photos from mining days and you can purchase some local maps from the counter. Coffee and home made cake is available with hot food too if your after something hearty to keep you going on the trail. Cakes are also available on order for special occasions. Friendly, down to earth people that are only too happy to accommodate thoughtful visitors.More
