Certainly would not recommend Black Estate. Overpriced for less than average food, wine & experience. There are far superior vineyards within close proximity

Another fantastic meal. All courses were delicious and looked gorgeous, the staff are lovely and the outlook over the vineyards is hard to beat. We'll be back.

Tasted a LOT of wine while in NZ and Black Estate was definitely one of the best - so much so I bought more wine when I got home! Even with a bit of miscommunication w/ our appt and harvest going on, they were fantastic...to accommodate us and it was very much appreciated (thank you Diana!).More

Nothing is exciting here. We had wine and food pairing menu. No explanation of what wines you drinking. Your food is dumped in front of you and maybe you get your pairing wine without asking for it. The meals you share - tiny! Everything is...below average, yet the price tag is far above average! Will never go back!More

We booked the Chefs Lunch with wine pairing. Food was lovely but a bit surprised about the sharing portion sizes however adequate. Flavours very good and they were able to change one of the dishes as I don’t eat mussels. Wait staff very knowledgeable and...friendly. We booked the B&B for the night. One would think that there would have been a bit of recognition that you are a customer spending over $800.00. When we checked in at the restaurant for a 1.45 table we asked if we could put our bags in the room prior. This was accommodated and we were briefly shown the room. First impressions looked nice but very basic, bed looked comfortable. Keeping in mind that this was a $475 pn room there was no TV or tissues in the room and the continental breakfast was not anywhere near the standard one would expect. Bread was nice however the jam was just covering the bottom of the jar and the lemon butter was only 1/4 full, with only 4 very small cubes of butter, barley enough to put on a piece of toast. When paying our bill after lunch for the entire stay as we were leaving early in the morning one of the owners was in the reception. Absolutely no social interaction as to whether we had enjoyed our meal and wishing us a pleasant stay, we were totally invisible!!!i Having spent over $820 it was a totally underwhelming experience and could certainly not recommend it. All the marketing in the world will not help a business if the owners can’t be bothered to even acknowledge a customer. We thought their wines in the restaurant were overpriced.More

We thoroughly enjoyed a chefs choice lunch with wine pairings followed by a nights stay in superb accommodation on the winery estate. We were well cared for by knowledgeable friendly , helpful staff , nothing was too much trouble ! We felt very special all...our needs were met . We followed a trail , did not use the bikes on account of a the delicious wine consumed , we did walk though on the warm sunny evening . We will definitely be back and strongly recommend the Black Estate to anyone who enjoys fine food and wine and a night away from home .More

The view is beautiful, the service was very good (a very helpful and knowledgeable American woman), wine pleasant (although I did notice a Chardonnay for $45 a glass - must be an exceptional award winner ?) the concept good - nice local produce … but...the portion size verus price was not right. Small plates equal small portions and the prices being charged large. And Gnocchi, only vegetarian option dry, not good didn’t finish it. Restaurant entrance with a fridge selling take out ice creams when you are selling $70 a plate steak lunches with $16 veg sides? … nope, doesn’t cut it. And when you are busy don’t forget to service the bathroom.More

By accident we ventured to this cellar door, where the staff were so inviting we stayed for lunch! Great service, great food with the views of magnificence. Wines are lovely, but select well, as it is a cool climate region. Hardest part is how to...get their wines back to Australia.More

The location and food are excellent but the portions are tiny and ludicrously expensive. The two of us had 'trust the chef' and got to share a decent meal for ONE and four glasses of wine which works out at $30 a glass. The portions...were so small I wondered whether I had misread the menu and that the price was for two - no, thats $350 for a VERY small meal and half a glass of wine per course. Like one of the other reviewers recently I felt 'ripped off'More

I couldn’t fault this restaurant. The food was divine, with many mouthwatering flavors and textures, while perfectly presented. The staff were confident, efficient, and extremely professional as they delivered such an amazing experience. The sparkling wine was a pleasant surprise because I don’t normally favor...a bubbly. I cannot comment on the price because we had a set menu for a celebration which was paid by another family member.More

Been here before and had such a great experience we came back. We were seated at 12, our menus came after 20 mins, the bread 20 mins after that and our first dishes an hour later. We were so hungry we finished the bread long...before we saw our mains, just to have something in our tummy's The menu isn't huge so the looong wait surprised. When it finally (almost 2 hours after we were seated) arrived my lamb was perfect and my wife's salmon very good. We accompanied with a gratin sort of thing which underwhelmed The view is as lovely as I remembered, and the food was good (when it came) but the long wait spoiled the whole experience.More

We arrived without booking because our first venue choice was closed due to the high winds the previous day. To be honest we (a group of four) were surprised that we could easily get a table on a Sunday so easily. Maybe my review highlights...the reason for this. My wife and I, also the lovely couple who we were with on this day (one of whom were celebrating a special birthday) have previously frequented this restaurant on more than one occasion, and let it be said, have enjoyed the experience. Not so much this time. Black Estate Winery is known to be a bit of an extravagant place, in as much as it is quite expensive per se. That said, IF the food and service is good, we have no issue with paying for quality. It seems that the restaurant has gone the way of many nowadays, by which I mean, they expect people to share food, which is fine as long as you both (or all) like the same food. Personally I like to order what I like, and not worry if someone else wants something completely different. It makes for a complete nonsense if for example one is vegetarian and the other a staunch meat or fish eater. Also, have we not just experienced a pandemic, which surely begs the question why we should be sharing anything at the table apart from bottled wine? As it was, we ordered two starters between the four of us as suggested, along with two main courses (Ribeye and Lamb). When the “starters” arrived, we all just looked at each other and laughed. One was marinated fish, which basically consisted of a very small, and I mean VERY small wafer thin slice of fish, oh, maybe around 6cm square and about 3 to 4mm in thickness. It was served on a tiny plate and even still it looked ridiculously lost. It actually looked like the bit that’s left when no one wants to be the one to take “the last little bit” off a shared plate. Shared between two it was a joke as it was barely one fork full. In fact it would be a poor offering for one even. The second starter wasn’t much better, being a venison tartare salad (I believe as I didn’t order), which again was so small it looked pathetic. To be honest we were all somewhat taken aback with this extremely pathetic offering. The taste of both was average, the fish however, I would say almost tasteless. The waitress asked ‘how was the starter’, to which I replied ‘small’. She said, which I thought was a little snarky ‘well it was a starter’. I replied ‘well you did ask’. I actually thought how rude, as surely when you “ask” customers for feedback, you should take their comment on-board, and not try to counter a negative comment with any form of sarcasm. To be honest we all had a feeling that the waitress absolutely knew the portions were ridiculous in size because she seemed a little uneasy when placing them on the table. The table was served again with empty half sized plates and then the food platters in the middle. Call me old fashioned, but I like a decent full sized plate to eat from, not a child-sized cake-plate when I eat a meal. I’m guessing that this could well be a ploy to try to make the food portions look ‘reasonable’. Hint, it doesn’t. As for the main meal, well the lamb was okay but a bit tough, but the Ribeye was quite tasty. Still, the portions were ridiculous. Interestingly, the waitress did say at the beginning that “we would have room for desert”, which I found to be a strange comment to make off the cuff, but NOW I understood why. I don’t normally bother with a desert, but to be honest I was still really hungry and just wanted to feel like I had actually had a reasonable amount, so we ordered a desert. Two between four, again as was recommended (the sharing thing). Again, pathetic. The desert spoons were the ones with a teaspoon size scoop with long handles. I think we all had one teaspoonful each or thereabouts. That, and the quality was so meh, in fact I would say that you can get much better from a supermarkets “home brand” freezer selection, and I’m not trying to be over critical here at all. Overall the presentation and quality of the food was very average, but the actual size of the portions was a complete joke. Decent eateries in these parts are very few and far between, and this is why such places can charge goodly amounts for such little fare. Sure, the venue itself offers stunning views over their vineyards, but the building itself is dark, shed-like and quite uninspiring. For locals who have a bit of cash, and who don’t travel, maybe this place is seen as “somewhere to be seen”…I’m not sure. There must be an element of snobbery abound, because goodness knows, for what you get for your money here currently, it sure isn’t anything to be excited about. If you are prepared to travel a little, there are far better venues, both for quality and choice of food, and most certainly portion size. After leaving the place, we called in to a local supermarket and bought items from the Deli counter, some nice breads, olives, cold meats etc, along with much better wine at a fraction of the price of that of the restaurant, and we took the party back home. We all enjoyed ourselves as we ate and drank whilst laughing at our “poor experience”. Personally I have never ever been to a restaurant and had a “three course meal” and have to then go out and buy food because I’m still hungry. This is a first and hopefully a last. Black Estate Winery is a venue that we will NOT be going back to and one that I certainly will not recommend. Very disappointed.More
