Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had an absolutely fantastic dinner tonight with a trust the Chef experience from Chef Ani. Every course was a surprise with tantalising flavours. We were really well looked after at The Waimate Restaurant and Bar. It was a joyful evening. Highly recommend.

Enjoyed a delicious pizza! Still impressed by their amazing renovation. Male waiter whilst good was a bit over confident!

We dined on a Saturday night, without a booking; surroundings, atmosphere, service and food were all right up there with the very best. Definitely affordable as well which is a big plus. Lucky for us we dined early as the dining room filled up while...we were there. A great asset for Waimate and our best dining out experience on our South Island travels.More

We drove from Timaru to Waimate to have a nice lunch and wine at the Waimate hotel restaurant. The background music was very loud, and given that there were only two other people in the restaurant, we asked for it to be turned down. The...girl mumbled something and went away. She didn't turn it down so unfortunately we had to leave and take our $150 elsewhere.More

I love this hotel & have been a few times but wish they'd offer low carb options!! They forgot the coleslaw with all our steaks & gave us asparagus instead but bought it out when questioned. Very small steak meals for $36 & my steak...was quite fatty & undercooked.More

The Waimate knocked the socks off us for lunch today. Such an iconic, magnificently restored building with an incredibly customer focused and friendly team who are led by the charismatic Rick (don’t fall for his monorail mention, ha ha). Just know that the array of...menu options will have you salivating and it’s real hard to choose. We narrowed it to a list of creative pizzas and went for sharing a Miso Porky with crunchy pork belly, edamame beans, red onion, black sesame seeds, spring onion and wasabi mayo that was delicious and the base was soooo perfect! We finished lunch with a Crème Brûlée that was gold medal worthy and we need to mention too that the wine and beer list was kinda fabulous also. These guys and this place knock the ball out of the universe! If you’re a traveller don’t hesitate stop here!More

Great meal and service. We went for the platter and a bottle of wine and thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Can’t fault the service we received. We visited 31 May for a late lunch while travelling.

We decided to stay a night in Waimate in our caravan & went out for dinner. Outstanding!! This restaurant must be a draw card for Waimate. It is in a beautifully restored building & the food & service was exceptional. We shared a popcorn cauliflower...& the wasabi mayo paired beautifully with it. He had an open steak sandwich, which was a daily special - served with curly fries, & a great meal. I had the gluten free beef cheeks & could not eat it all. They were tender & accompanied with the carrot, onion & potato & jus. Not winter but something that isn’t often gluten free when dining out. It wasn’t possible to attempt one of their incredible looking variety of desserts displayed at the bar. Looking at these there must be a really great pastry chef working there. A restaurant with a great variety of meals, service & taste!More

Friendly service. Excellent quality of food. My husband choked while eating (medical reason) and the waiter sprung into action and confidently did Heimlich manoeuvre. Thank you. Definitely will return.

Dropped in whilst passing through Waimate, impressed by the renovation work, earthquake strengthening & ambience of the old pub. Very welcoming and knowledgeable staff. Tucker (ravioli & "Pen" pizza - bacon, blue cheese & apple ) was tasty, quickly delivered and enjoyed by both of...us. Highly recommended, especially if they get "Shenley blue" on the menu.More
