Service was average, a bit slow, and not great when I made a complaint about my food. The young girl responded that she would pass the feedback on as she didn’t know about the food as she doesn’t work in the kitchen, so I asked for a manager. She went off to find someone but no one arrived so I had to go looking. I had ordered the small nachos which I thought would be plenty (having had nachos many times at other places) as I wasn’t overly hungry. They turned up with 4 small cubes of chicken and about 4 beans in amongst the sauce and a small plateful of nacho chips. I didn’t think this was worth $15 so let them know. They were surprised as this was the normal portion and hadn’t had a previous complaint. I thought this was strange and said I wasn’t going to pay $15 for that. They said they would add some more chicken and it did come back with what I thought was a fair amount. This all happened while my partner was munching on what looked like an awesome chicken burger and chips which was a good deal for $23. A shame that the nachos were such a rip off to start with.

Basic pub food but beware of wine being foisted

Nice local pub with a good vibe in a historic hotel. Food is all that you would expect in a pub. The only dark cloud on our experience was the house Sauve blanc was wretched. I normally would accept a wine differenrt than i was expecting but this was, well, wretched. i brought it up to the gal behind the bar and she admitted that she could not tell the difference between a chardonay and a NZ Sauve Blanc. :-/ Turns out that the manager, Aga, does not empower the staff to make things right so my only recourse was to to pay for the wine we did not drink and pay for 2 glasses of a NZ sauve. Turns out that their house white was a sauve blanc from Chile. I guess Aga does not have faith in what the local NZ wineries can do.

Fabulous food and staff

I love this place. We went at Matariki and it was fully booked. I can see why. It had a great atmosphere. The staff were friendly and efficient. The menu had a great variety. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food. The pizzas were delicious, my daughter loved her burger and we also had some sharing options which were all delicious. Highly recommended.

We’re local customers and usually find the blue and brown pubs very good. Unfortunately the rare occasion we ate at the blue, the food was tasty albeit very little salmon for a $30 meal. However the real disappointment was the girl who served us. Extremely rude and no table manner! Should not be working front of house. The manager did offer a refund which we declined as the food wasn’t really the problem.

Bad food.

Do not order the pork belly! It’s dry and bland with no flavor at all. It was expensive and inedible. The waitstaff were lovely, they asked how it was as they could see the food hardly got touched. We told them it was awful. The staff agreed and said they usually advise customers to eat elsewhere.

Yuck meals and rude server

Wouldn't recommend this pub for food we ordered pork belly bites for starter which came out 5 mins after we had put our order in and seemed like they were just heated up out the fridge and the steak was not ribeye like they passed it off to be on the menu. The guy was quite rude that served us behind the bar. Overall disappointing.

Indifferent service and lukewarm meat

I’ve eaten here several times before with no complaints. It’s basic pub grub but things have slipped since my last visit, I ordered the ribs special which was decidedly lukewarm, not hot, when It arrived. I sent it back and made a nick in one of the ribs to identity it were it to come back dressed up as a new dish. Sure enough it was returned with the same meat minus the one rib I had tasted. My concern was about how long the meat had been lying around at this decidedly cool temperature. It’s not exactly leading edge food hygiene. The was a slight unpleasant metallic taste to some of the meat. Nobody came to check that the second dish was acceptable. When it was cleared, the waitress just mumbled ‘everything finished here p’ and took the plate with no enquiry about whether I was happy with the meal. The best I can say is that my drinks bar staff was excellent and spotted a mistake on the bill. I don’t think I’ll be returning. Lukewarm meat is a total no no as far as I am concerned.

We arrived at the blue pub for a drink and dinner after a day of skiing. We were with a group of 10. Turned out that one of our friends only had his UK drivers license with him. We were about to order when the guy behind the bar told our friend that he couldn't serve him because of his UK drivers licence and that he wasnt even allowed in the pub. The food menu looked amazing and we were very hungry after a whole day of skiing. There were kids in the pub with their parents having alcohol beverages and we were turned away. I think that is just very disappointing especially in these times.. Bad service, rude staff. Went opposite to the Brown Pub where his ID got accepted.

OK lunch in a lovely traditional pub.

Visited for lunch in Nov 2023. Very friendly staff behind the bar. Lovely bunch. Beer is great as is the wine. Menu is similar to all the other restaurants in NZ (someone really needs to think outside the box in order to stand out) and prices are average. Food arrived and while the fish and chips was very good, my wife's Spinach and artichoke dip was still cold so had to go back. On return it still wasn't really hot in the middle but she stirred it around to warm it through. It was very tasty though. Nice old pub with traditional interior and real fires / log burners, where I would think in the freezing winter, would be a great place to spend the evening.

The building is a buet, and captures the warm of the sun. It draws you in from the minute you see it. But I was not expecting the menu to be so versatile. The menu has most things available GF, DF and V. The food was brought out efficiently looked and tasted gorgeous, we will be back again. thanks for reminding me the old places off the beaten track are worth the adventure.

we arrived as a group of 7 friends all aged between 22-32 with id and passports. 1 of us didnt have a nz license or passport and were told they were not allowed to stay. he said he would not drink but just have a meal but was still not allowed to stay. kids are allowed to stay so what's the difference??? staff were so rude . such a disappointment

Sunday outing

We stopped off at the Blue Pub for a last minute lunch and our first visit to Methven. I ordered the Mexican salad, but received a different salad. The waitress was amazing and swiftly came back with the correct salad and a takeaway box so I could take the other home. Both salads were delicious and the service spot on. Will definitely be back.

The pub with missing beer

This is / was a favourite of ours and we haven’t been to Methven for years so we though we’d try. The first three beers we requested, weren’t available. We chose an IPA in a bottle. It was nice. The chips were good for the price but a little cold. Not a flash experience but if they improved the beer menu, we might come back one day.

Amazing service!

I don’t normally leave reviews but last night we had booked for a 40th birthday, the staff were friendly, amazing and so accomodating. The food was fast and excellent for a party of 20, couldn’t be faulted. Thank you for helping make a really special memorable night - you were amazing 🤩

Rude security guards and bad set up!

I was hugely disappointed with the blue pub! Went there after the rodeo for a drink with some friends. The security guards kicked my friend out, then continued to kick me out as well calling me a bad friend and silly b*tch for letting my friend get that drunk and said we were never welcome back! Very rude and disappointing end to my night! They also could of had a better set up, considering the large crowd that was expected from the rodeo.
