Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were just in town for one night and we chose to eat here as it was in the town and not far from where we were staying.
It’s a large establishment with seating outside and a bar area as well as the restaurant. It’s was fairly full when we arrived but they found us a table and quickly handed out the menus and some water. The menu was pretty typical of pub food in NZ with burgers, a few fish and meat diets and some pasta.
We ordered some chicken wings between us to start and a roast of the day and fish and chips for our mains. The food arrived quickly so that was good. Everything was fine but nothing stood out hence the 3/5 rating.

The Fijian servers were so lovely!! The meals were very average, small & expensive for what they were. Appreciated they waited until everyone had finished eating before clearing the table. Had to ask a few times for water & cutlery. No dessert menu offered just the pensioner special desserts bought out, the rest of us would have had a dessert too!

We arrived on a busy late afternoon without a reservation. The staff were friendly and welcoming with outside tables available... perfect on this lovely evening. The drinks were reasonably priced and wine list small, but a balanced selection. We tried a pizza, baked Brie and Pear, blue cheese and walnut salad to share. The Brie was lovely and came tight crunchy bread, The salad was laden with prosciutto ( which was unexpected, but nice). Canned pears and crumbled, yellow, blue cheese on the salad were equally unexpected.. The pizza was nice enough. The restaurant was pumping and I checked out the meals as I walked through and the other guests all looked happy - we may have just ordered the wrong thing this night

Unfortunately when we arrived for lunch there was a couple sitting outside with an aggressive dog that greeted us, a group of 4 smoking next to the main entrance door, no umbrellas up on the outside tables, no staff and the food - it was dismal. Chicken and hash brown deep fried so much it could not be eaten and a few potato sticks on a soggy piece of lettuce., it was disappointing and a terrible experience. Would certainly not be going back.

We arrived in Geraldine on a Monday and hadn't booked ahead for dinner. However, those at the Village Inn could not have been more welcoming and the restaurant staff were absolutely lovely. We had Blue Cod which was fresh and delicious and cooked perfectly - we thought the restaurant could put many very expensive restaurants to shame as they often over-cook fish. Not so the Village Inn. If you are in Geraldine, call in.

Have lost count of the number of times we've made the lengthy return trip to visit Geraldine and always eaten here after being very impressed on the first visit.
Extreme opposite this time.
Visibly obviously massively busy (almost at capacity), but not in the least surprised by that because of Geraldine Festival (which is why we went, like most that were there).
Oddly management had NOT seemed to expect that.
Every time before had been given menus and taken to a table by friendly staff for them to return and take our order.
NOT THIS TIME.
People milling round, looking lost and not sure what to do or where to go.
Saw a queue at the bar counter so joined it.
Asked a passing waitress if we should be waiting there for a meal or go to a table and were told to stay in the queue then order at the counter.
Thought it would help reduce time at the counter to decide on order before getting there so asked next passing waitress if menus were available.
In fairness they were running flat out, but did find a couple for us although we did feel guilty about even asking.
When we got to the counter and ordered we were asked what table we were sitting at, then got a blank stare when we explained (in frustration) about being told to queue first.
Finally seated and fed by staff under extreme pressure, being aided by rostered off staff called in from scheduled day off to help.
Meals were adequate, but like the whole experience considerably less enjoyable than all previous visits.
Expecting we'll try out all the other dining options in town before we go back - if ever.

Was recommended by the lodging owner who we then saw there with his wife so obviously stood by his review, LOL. It was Halloween night and the eve of the World Rugby championship so it was a very raucous scene. The food was all of good quality and a few of the local rugby players coaxed us on the dance floor with them. They were in a happy mood but that would unfortunately probably change the next day when New Zealand lost.

Wednesday 29th January we called in to have a beer and dinner. Just as we arrived the restaurant and bar lost power along with most businesses in the Main Street of Geraldine. The Manager told us there was nothing they could do and closed up everything (which was fair enough).
However, the power came back on in 55 minutes so we returned to the restaurant bar and were told no food tonight as she had sent all the kitchen staff home and the cash tills that run the bars weren’t working.
She was very direct with all the public to the point of being rude. We even offered to pay in cash but no that was not an option. The Manager would have turned away at least 30+ people that evening.

Stopped off in Geraldine for an overnight break with tired kids. Thought we might grab a takeaway pizza and eat it in the motel. We ordered two marguerita pizzas which were $18.50 each. What we got was two frozen pizzas. At best they were edible. Kids very disappointed. The service was very good, attentive and friendly. The other food might be good but I’d avoid the overpriced supermarket pizza option.

It’s a shame I need to give this place a 1 out of 5 as we came here earlier in the day and had a pleasant experience from the bar staff, however when returning at around 5pm we had a very different experience. I was ignored at the bar for locals until one of the locals said I was before them, I then politely gave my order which was for two small bottles of Prosecco. They were dumped in front of me and a card machine thrust at me, I was paying cash, which got me a huff, and then a back turned to me to deal with someone else. I wasn’t given any glasses so I waited and asked for a couple of glasses to which got me an eye roll (am I meant to swig my drink from the bottle)? I then asked for the ‘guest’ WiFi password to be told ‘no unfortunately not’ no other explanation given just a back turned on me again! Found out later it was broken, would it have been so difficult to have told me that!?

The four of us had a very enjoyable evening meal. Us ladies had a half portion of the roast and the other meals were the full roast portion and the pork ribs. There was an option for a senior meal which was the half portion roast plus the apple shortcut dessert for an extra dollar. After enquiring about the senior meal the server said we could have it ( we are in our 60’s). We had booked for 7 pm and when we arrived it as very busy, whic is always a good sign. Would recommend.

Pleasant outdoor area for a meal and a drink on a warm summer evening. Ordered the "Fish of the day" which was elephant fish and came with chips and a bit of salad. Worst fish I've ever eaten. Thoroughly overcooked and covered in a very salty herb shake that totally killed any taste that the fish might have had. Ghastly! What was the "chef" thinking? To be fair, the other meals that I saw being brought out looked fine. The service was good and the staff friendly and helpful. Just don't order the fish!

Booked for dinner on arrival in Geraldine. I had the Chatham Island cod meal. A generous helping of fresh, tasty fish with nice chips and the most exciting side salad I’ve had in a long while. My partner had the real garlic bread and the pork roast. The pork was succulent with crisp crackling with tasty potato mash made from actual potatoes. The staff were friendly and very efficient. A great meal.

It was a Sunday and lots of restaurants were not open. We were glad we found this Inn, which was very crowded outside as the weather was mild.
We had a very nice waitress who served us with a smiley face. The whitebait was nicely cooked and so was the roast pork. Both meals were generous, so we didn't have room to try the desserts.
Highly recommended !!

The evening was warm so all outside tables were taken .
