Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We loved our experience at Carnegies Old Library! We were walk in guests on a busy Saturday night so were thankfully a table could be found for us quickly. We received menus and as they offer a good selection of beverages so we had no trouble choosing some thing to drink. Choosing what to eat was more difficult as the menu had so many great things on offer. Eventually my partner chose a Wood Fired Pork Belly Pizza and I the Lamb Ribs (half). The food was delicious! My Lamb-rids were melt in the mouth... so much so we are keen to see if we can replicate them at home. The generous portion size left us with no room to explore the dessert menu and the bill was a very pleasant surprise. We have been telling everyone about this meal so have no trouble recommending Carnegies to you all.

The food was outstanding. I had salmon poached in an edible sushi wrapper, which kept the fish moist. The pavlova dessert was the best presentation and flavor I've tasted in five month-long visits to New Zealand. The menu features pizza but has many other choices. The staff provided excellent service, and they were fascinated to learn more about steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, for whom the restaurant is named and who spent most of his life in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This restaurant is located in one of the 18 libraries in New Zealand built with funds provided by Carnegie. Built in 1913, its exterior is charming. The interior has been redone and is bright, open, and casual. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening and hope to return.

Carnegies was recommended to us and we were not disappointed. The service was very good and the Lady who took our order listened to my request and adjusted my meal accordingly. My husband absolutely loved his lamb and crunchy cooked vegetables. Well worth the money.

We were recommended to go to this restaurant for our evening meal. What an amazing experience. The welcome and service by Lisa was A+++. She was so friendly and pleasant despite the fact that she was taking orders, serving drinks and delivering the meals to the customers. She smiled all the time. And to top this off the meal that Nial cooked for us was superb. A+++ to the chef - A huge ThankYou to Lisa and Nial for wonderful experience

Food was generally good although the salads were loaded with too much red onion as everyone seems to these days. The service however, was terrible. In a group of 10 people, my meal never showed up. Everyone started theirs and I went up to query where mine was. I was told it was coming. No apology or acknowledgement that they’d forgotten it. When our group had finshed their meals, still no sign of mine. When I queried it again, calmy and politely, I was rudely told to chill out its on its way. A tip to Carnegies, if you stuff up, own it and apologise - don’t make your problem the customers. You’ve lost a customer and any recommendations from me - I’ll be telling my 10 people of the rude service.

Carnegies – previously known as the Old Library Cafe – is close to the cross roads at the centre of Fairlie. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday. The chef prepares many of the dishes in a wood fired oven which is located behind the bar area and can easily be seen from the restaurant. One speciality is home made pizza – some with unusual ingredients – available to eat in or take away. The eat in menu also contains grilled salmon steak, ribeye steak, rack of lamb and salads. There is a tempting choice of desserts. We enjoyed our evening – a short walk up from the campground where we were staying – a friendly welcome, excellent service and delicious food.

I chose the warm lamb salad which was soo delicious, My husband had a half rack of lamb, cooked to his liking, and loved the accompanying vegies. He was fascinated with them cooking it in the wood fired pizza oven. We both then had dessert: he the apple crumble, and I had the sticky date pudding. Yum! The staff were attentive and easy friendly and natural. Recommend! July 8th. Laurel and Les

I had no problems finding something suitable here. The rack of lamb was amazing!! And a half serve more than enough for a week!! So tasty and well presented. Cooked to perfection. Topped by an NZ cider - just perfect! Alan had the ribs - again a half serve was overflowing the plate - such generous serves! Thanks to the staff who were really well informed about cross contamination issues (so I avoided the wood fired pizzas which also looked tasty!).

Pizza was amazing, super accommodating with half in half flavour options. Generous toppings and serving size... chips were next level crunchy on outside and just right inside yummo! Eggs Benny also enjoyed by those that had it. Lovely setting and Great service by waitress Haley! We'll definitely be back.

Booked a table for 7:30pm - We arrived 10 mins late and we got greeted outside the front door by a grumpy waitress asking if we were the 7:30 booking. Got told in a very rude manner we were 15 mins late and "who does this on a Sunday". We regretted very much dining here. Worst customer service ever and average pizza's. To all travelers travelling through Fairlie - Don't even consider dining here.

We had a couple of awesome pizzas here but the well done steak was actually burnt. They probably do rare or medium just fine. Other meals looked and smelt amazing. Friendly service and they let us stay past closing time and didn't make us feel rushed. A cozy gem in town.

Fantastic restaurant, lovely service from the moment you walk in. The wood fired rack of lamb is an absolute standout. Perfectly cooked and deliciously tender. The steak was outstanding too. Highly recommend this restaurant.

We were told by the camp ground owner that this is the best place to eat out in Fairlie and our experience would bear this out. Great food - we went back for a second green salad- pleasant service. Attractive ambiance. Great value- the portions are large so you can easily share. May well come back tomorrow!.

I’m currently eating the full rack of lamb ribs and feel the need to review it mid meal. This is hands down the best lamb I’ve ever had. It’s not even close. If you’re stopping by, don’t hesitate, just visit. The food is fantastic, the beer selection is fantastic, clearly a quality establishment.

It was Friday night on the eve of the festive season so we decided to go for an early dinner as we have not made a reservation. The place was still quiet with a few tables occupied. We ordered pizza with half sundried tomatoes and salmon on the other half plus a steak burger. Both dishes came out within 15 minutes and tasted good. The steak was tender and cooked the way I liked.
