Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I think he’s a baking genius. We love his salmon and bacon pies and others love his pork and applesauce with crackling pie, but with his crayfish pie he’s outdone himself. If you’re fortunate enough to go to Franz Lieber’s Fairlie Bakehouse after freshly baked crayfish pies come out of the oven, consider yourself among the lucky few. We had a frozen one that we were able to take home, heat up and eat it with our favourite white wine, and it was divine. As with all the Lieber pies we’ve tried, there are large chunks of meat, in this case crayfish. What a labour of love to prepare them, remove them from the shells, and combine them with just the right ingredients to allow you to taste the sweetness of the crayfish. Even the garnish of a cray leg adds the finishing touch. My only critique is that it’s a small pie, and kept me wanting more.

We stopped in on our way home for the famous Fairlie pies and were not disappointed! Considering the huge queues of other hungry punters we were served pretty quickly. The pies are $6 each which does sound pricey but they’re definitely worth it! I got the mince and cheese and hubby got the pork belly. They’re bigger than normal pies and are jam packed with real food! None of that gravy and the fillers you get in other pies. With Fairlie pies you get real meat and cheese, and pork with apple sauce. Simply divine 👍🏼

Wow, what can we say except YUMMEE. My wife had the vegetarian pie and I had the smoked chicken & bacon, both pies were delicious and were followed up with a huge custard slice and a large portion of chocolate brownie cheesecake. No wonder people were queuing out onto the street, highly revommended

no smiles. no kindness. no good attitude at all. asked for cutleries (after chasing the waitress while she was pretending to do something at the counter, chatting and laughing with the other girls) the reply wasn’t even a word, she just pointed the shelf without even looking at me, quite rude and unrespectful. if only the staff would be lovely like your food..

Apparently people come from far and wide to sample the Fairlie Bakery pies. We were told at the local campground (where we were staying for several days) that people deliberately stop over in Fairlie in order to take advantage of the bakery. As we were staying for a week, we were able to try different options and can confirm that the Pork and Apple and Mince and Cheese pies are first class. We also enjoyed the breakfast bacon and egg frittatas and gave in to temptation to try the cream doughnuts and the custard squares. Everything absolutely first class. There is indoor and outside seating and, of course, many people take away. There seemed to be a queue each time we were there. We believe the bakery is open from 6.30 am to 4 pm.

Stopped here for lunch en route to Twizel on the recommendation of a Christchurch resident who said the pies were renounce for their variety. Have to say we were more than a bit disappointed as there was only a choice of a pork and apple or a beef mince pie on offer. Chose the pork and apple which was OK, but didn’t have any ‘wow’ factor for me. Seemed to us to be a bit of a tourist trap living off an established reputation.

We stopped for lunch and had to queue to put in our order but the queue moved quickly due to great staff who had everything down to a fine art. We ordered a pie and hot cross bun and lattes. The pie was delicious, lots of meat and cheese. The hot cross bun was very tasty with lots of fruit including mixed peel. The latte was great too. Would certainly go back next time we are through there.

Friends recommended we stop at Fairlie en route from Central Otago to Christchurch. They said we would find it by the queue! They were right and we are glad we took their advice. Both of our chiices were flavourful with a good balance of sauce and tender meat. Despite the queue, the wait was not long! Recommended!

The place was packed, but obviously the owners are so switched on because they had about 10 staff ready to take orders. Maybe you should send a video link to popular bakeries in Australia, they still haven’t worked out how to cater for large numbers. We had pies and coffee, and I’m sure the kids had milkshakes. Delicious, efficient and worth the stop. Made a return visit on the way back to Christchurch.

Slightly chaotic service at the counter as the shop was very busy. We asked for cold pies to take away which were duly produced and put in a lovely carry-box. We had a salmon and bacon pie and a pork and apple pie with gorgeous huge piece of crackling on top. Both pies were heavenly.

During our family campervan holiday recently we stopped at Farlie bake house to try one of their famous pies, and we were not disappointed, they were AMAZING!!The line was out the door but it was worth the wait! We had the Pork Belly and apple sauce pie with a piece of crackling on top, so so good and the kids had mince and cheese, my daughter kept saying there is so much meat in this pie, they went down so well that we got back in line for another and we got some to take with us, this time we had Salmon and Bacon and Creamy chicken the kids got steak and cheese, again amazing!! Whole pieces of salmon in the pie. The only downside is that we have be ruined forever, for the rest of our week long trip no other pie was ever good enough and I dare say never will be.... even the Arrowtown pies didn’t come close ..... we will be back just for the pies!!

So much choice, everything looked delicious. I loved my pork belly pie and my husband enjoyed his bacon and salmon pie equally, even though he doesn't normally like salmon. The Gluten free cherry and lemon cake was exquisite. Apparently there is normally a queue out the door at lunchtime, so go early if possible, we were there at 11.30am and it was already quite busy.

We stopped here on recommendation from NZ Travel Tips. This is a slick operation: service is fast and friendly, pies are top notch full of actual meat, actual veg, actual gravy and no extender that I could see. Drinks were quick and efficient and yummy as well. I’ll dream about those pies for a while!

A couple people in Australia told me to stop at this bakery for the pork belly pie. When we arrived in New Zealand this place was closed on our way to our accommodation. The next morning we drove back 30 minutes to get the pork belly pie with crackling. So happy we did. The pork belly was lean and did not find it fatty at all. Had coffees and a pie and we were on our way.
