Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Despite being a "Cafe and Bar", this place does not serve hot drinks or alcohol. Seems like a cosy little place to have a meal if that's what you're after but the staff didn't seem too interested in having patrons there.

This place has got to be the greatest joke in NZ. The woman at the entry I don't think wanted to be there. Very rude. Asked what their fish and chips were like. She replied they're on the menu. Asked what beer they had and...then came the big surprise she said they didn't serve beer only soft drinks. Yet they are a pub. Walked out and went across the road.More

Interesting restaurant. Went with hesitation based on previous reviews but had a pleasant meal. If you work to the rules i.e. they may be open to 6pm but you need to order by 5pm you’ll be all good! Had pizza, fries and a couple of...drinks and was good food. Staff were pleasant if a little bit gruff but we had no issues. Great atmosphere and would eat here again.More

Wobbly times, wobbly menu, wobbly service. I'd pass on this establishment, it could be charming, but with doors open from 4:30 to 6:00, and last round at 5:30 it's not worth your time.

We had been pre-warned that the cafe Kea was to close within 45 minutes of our arrival. Admittedly the initial reception was not that friendly rather very business like. But once we established a bit of common ground and were not put off, we found...the staff to be quite nice and chatty. The fit out has been there for some time, but the restaurant was clean. We were very impressed with the quality and quantity of the food and the beer was certainly refreshing. Because of a shortness of staff, customers will need to go up to the bar to place their orders and have a bit of patience until the ordered items arrived. But we went back to our accommodation well nourished and were happy with the price we paid.More

Lovely home cooking, good beer after a hot drive. We had the bangers and mash which was nice and hot, and fish and chips which was nice and fresh, not greasy.

Paid 33.50 for drinks and snacks, was then asked to pay 2.50 to charge phones. Server then came over and said they were closing in 15 minutes

As mentioned, staff a bit like a Kea sometimes, not sure what you will get. But the pizza and bangers and mash was hot, pretty tasty and the drinks were cold. Much more comfortable than the cafe across the road for me!

This was relaxing, efficient and beer was cold! Staff were understaffed and worked to the bone but unlike across the road, these guys are friendly and food was good. Value for money and good seating options inside and outside. Plus the history of this place...is very interesting, check out the walls. Toilet was clean. Go here! :-)More

Our experience was mixed. My daughter, who is vegan, asked for hot chips and salad, and was told that because they were short staffed it wasn't possible to stray from the menu. We thought this was odd, as several offerings had sides of chips and...salad. There were no hot drinks available, and the staff seemed very stressed. Three of us really enjoyed our soup with freshly baked rolls, but it was very unpleasant having our daughter sit outside in the car when she could easily have been accommodated.More

Couldn't even get served. The rudest person said without a mask we can't come in. That is fine but I have an excemption and than I was asked to prove it which is a human rights violation and actually not allowed as per on the...NZ mask excemption website.. My partner asked if they had a mask he could borrow to get in and was rudely told no. Looking at the reviews I am surprised this place can survive. Friendliness is not a hard thing to do no matter what you have decided your rules are. Left and very glad I did judging by all the other reviews!More

If you wonder why the store across the road is always busy, come in hear. The place is dull and gloomy. Open the place up to some brightness would be a good start. The person who was on needs to go to a charm school...as she was shocking. This must also harm the business. Come on owner, don't you care about your business. The food available was almost non existant, toasted sandwiches an some carrot cake i the Coffee was simply crap. Please people, if you want good quality food and a bit of friendly service then like most of others, then go across the road. We will never ever call in here again.More

Yep I had the same as the past reviews about service being prickly but, Thats the point of difference and as the resturant name says it's a KEA well known for attitude. Once you get over the shock of having to do something to order,...you dont just sit and wait you go up to order, The pizza was fantastic the hot drinks we had were well presented and tasty, and we ended up having a good conversation Yeah I'd go back just to get a bit of "perspective"More
